Default poundage question?

I'm looking at buying a new bow this year. My old bow is apx. 10 years old. I shot it at apx. 79# and shot a 460 gr. arrow at 260 fps. I know that the new bows can be shot at lower poundage and shoot a faster arrow but does anyone shoot a bow over 70#? And if not why?

Over 70....not necessary with todays bows...I'm waiting on a 70 lb Allegiance and will shoot it at 68 lbs. the same as I am my current bow. Todays bows as you said carry so much more KE than older bows...I don't see it necessary to pull all that weight for whitetails...now elk, I might max it out...

Unless you are going after the big animals in Africa there is absolutely no reason to shoot a bow that draws more than 70 pounds. Another down side to wanting to draw over 70 pounds is that you are limiting yourself on models to choose from. Not all that many are available with 80, 90, and 100 pound limbs any more. It just isn't needed.

Having said that if you can pull higher weight easily and are equally accurate with that much weight then go for it, assuming you like the bows available. I am a firm believer in being able to shoot heavier and heavier arrows at the same relatively moderate speeds as others are shooting lighter arrows. It is good insurance for those dreaded bad shots into shoulder blades, spines, etc... that we are all going to make at one time or another. Especially on game like elk and moose. If I can shoot a 600 grain arrow at 270 - 280 fps as accurately as John Doe can shoot a 400 grain arrow at the same speed .................. Heck Yeah, I'll take it!

i would have to say there is no need to shoot that much weight with the bows we have today u could shoot 50lbs with some bows and still shoot over 260fps
