Default Any ideas on the bad hit

What did I hit? I shot a doe this afternoon at 3:45 PM from a height of 16 feet and a distance of about 15 yards. The doe was moving slowly thru a shooting lane and I saw the arrow hit what looked like just behind the diaphragm just a little bit above center line. The arrow was a pass through and the doe didn't jump or hunch, she just ran off. I lost site of her after about 40 yards. After climbing down to check the arrow at 4:30 PM, there was absolutely no blood on the arrow or around the shot site. There was some hair and a white, almost chalk-like substance on the arrow and the fletching. I also smelled the arrow but could not distinguish any particular odor. After following the trail for about 40 yards, there was absolutely no blood or other fluid that I could distinguish. I didn't go past the 40 yards because I didn't want to push the deer. Does anyone know of a diagram on the internet that might show me what I could have hit? I have a pretty good mental picture of where the arrow impacted. I plan to go back tomorrow morning but I'm not very optimistic because the grass is about waist high in places and it's pretty rough Missouri river bottom woods. I really don't know what went wrong with the shot and I'm stumped on why I can't find any kind of trail to follow.

Is it possible you hit lower than you think? Brisket?

Sounds like your shot was higher then you thought. The white stuff on your arrow is fat from the back.It may be you shot over the spine and through the loin.I think the deer will survive and you probably won't find much blood.IMHO Good luck

IT definitely was not a low hit. Besides I'm sure a brisket hit would produce some blood on the arrow at least and the substance on the arrow was definitely not fat.

The white hair made me think low?

OOppps, mis-read.
Hair and a white substance.
Not white hair.
Yep maybe too high like Recurve said?

Probably too high- I hit a buck like that a couple years ago- never found one single drop of blood after searching the whole evening and the next morning. Your deer will most likely survive.

Well, spent a couple of hours just walking thru the grass and woods hoping to find the doe but, I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I did hunt the first couple of hours and could of taken a shot, but without practicing to make sure there wasn't something wrong with the equipment I let her slide. Sadly it wasn't the first lost bow deer but hopefully it just might be the last. Practice, practice, practice then practice some more.
