Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?

I was just interested because my little bro claims he wouldn't go there if he could for free, I myself would love to, thought it might be interesting to see what others think.

I may not be too keen on hunting the hot, brushy country in Texas for whitetails, but I am not stupid!

Anyone who wants to go "hunt" at a place with fences and feeders, isn't a real bowhunter to me. Shame on you.

It's a free hunt, sure I would go. It's not "real" hunting in my book, but it'd still be fun. I just wouldn't have the same satisfaction. But that's okay, as long as I realize that, and don't have the attitude that I'm the best hunter ever because I killed a 190 class whitetail at Kings Ranch. I think most of you hunters know what I mean.

The king ranch is not high fenced. Out there a single pasture might be 15,000 acres or larger so you are not likely to see any fences anyway. My cousin used to work out there and they have some huge bucks out there on the ranch. He said if you get out there in the middle of the ranch you can get lost in a hurry. You just have miles and miles of brush. You normally have to get in a big tower blind to be able to see anything because the brush is too thick to see through on the ground level. So you get up high to see over it. I've never got to hunt the King ranch but I've hunted other ranches in South Texas and it is not as easy as everybody thinks to hunt down there.

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?

Im certainly not paying 20 grand for a friggin deer.. Thats bullsmack.

id rather go to Alberta for a bighorn sheep for that kind of money or even treat my buddy to an elk hunt someplace and still have money left over. I have whitetails here. Im not picky. I dont care if i ever get a P&Y buck. I just enjoy being in the woods hunting. I feel grateful to harvest the deer i do.

but like i said earlier.. if its free its for me!

I'm sure you, being the hunting god that you are, has never hunted near a picked cornfield, a bean field, an oak ridge, or even over any green grass.

Better beleive I'd go if it was free. But why pay for it when I can hunt my own ranch - yep, over feeders.

$20,000 for a 200 class deer?? OH MAN - that would be one safe deer in front of me!!! I could buy my own hunting land for that much money! WOW! I think I just shivered.

I would certainly take the trip ,But there is no way I would ever shoot any animal in a pen or over bait ,neither are moral or necessary.

This would be a great chance for some photos and some time outdoors.

When in Rome you do not have to do as the Romans!

It boggles my mind to hear 825000 acres called a pen. For some of you who don't know that is 1289 square miles. 30 miles long by 40 miles wide is 1200 square miles. On the state highway that runs through the ranch you drive for 30 minutes at 75 mph, nothing but King Ranch. Is the STATE of Rhode Island even that big? I don't know but I bet it's close.

I couldn't do it because I oppose fenced hunting and have worked toward having it banned here . I'm aware of the scale of the King Ranch , and the laws regarding the practice in Texas , but I just couldn't do it . I don't have a problem with anyone who wants to , it is legal there , but it's not for me .

Kevin, the King Ranch is not high fenced, all it has on its bounderys are a six strand barb wire fence 4 and half feet tall feet tall to keep the cattle in.... it does not stop the deer from going where ever they choose.......

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?

People PLEASE find out what your talking about before you open your mouth.......

The King ranch IS NOT HIGH FENCED. The ranch is actually 4 chunks of land that are all within the same area of south Texas. You have the Santa Gertrudis divison, the Laureles, the Encino, and my favorite the Norias division. The Norias division alone is 240,000 + acres. The ranch is 1.3x bigger then the state of Rhode Island, or 1,050x the size of Central Park in New York. I've had the chance several times to hunt on the King ranch and have shot everything from 160" bucks to Nailgi to quail to even an axis buck that crossed from the Yuttria ranch.

The King ranch gets top dollar for all hunts because, they are the King ranch. Theres a certain stigma about the King ranch that draws people to it. Its something that non-native Texans dont/cant understand. The King ranch is just one of those places that by simply saying the name, all shorts of images pops into ones mind.

Man I love south Texas and our big ranches, oil gushers, and muy grande bucks..................

I would hunt there for free but I think those prices are a joke! I'd rather hunt Canada for less money and still have a good chance at a Monster for one fee.

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?

All expenses paid and I'd hunt there. But if it were my cash I can think of a few other places where I could hunt similar sized bucks and spend less money.

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?

"I would hunt there for free but I think those prices are a joke!"

Your NOT paying to hunt A DEER, your paying to hunt THE KING RANCH. The name, the stigma, and the history of the ranch are why they are able to charge what they do. Most of the people who hunt this ranch are not simply their just for the deer....................................

So your paying to hunt at a place where you feel "cool" because you can say you've been there. ha, ha! I get it now. Not to mention, if you've gone there...you have a checkbook thick enough to pay for it. Again...I understand how some are. All status symbols.

Granted those are nice bucks, but it would be dang tough to be hunting bucks that have doe sized bodies to them(being from where I'm from).
