RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
They also don't realize the sheer size of the King Ranch. To put it in some perspective for them, let's justput it this way... The King Ranch is approx.825,000 acres, nearly 1300 square miles.... Larger, in fact, than the entire State of Rhode Island. So, if it's unethical to hunt the King Ranch, it's unethical to hunt in Rhode Island. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D [8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D] |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Wow, this is pretty crazy. I never thought this would turn into a Texas vs the world debate. I have nothing against TX or how you hunt down there, I guess I've always thought people should tend to their own gardens and not worry about their neighbors. There are plenty of things wrong w/ SD, I don't need to worry about TX. I'm sure you are all big boys down their and can take care of yourselves.
Just for the record, I'd hitchhike if I had to from SD to get a free hunt on the King Ranch!!!!! |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
I agree Dubs. The only thing I have said about the way other folks hunt was "sitting on your butt in a treestand". And for the record I do that myself some, when I can find a tree! I don't think it is lazy or unethical, it's just not real effective where I hunt.
I just get tired of everytime the word "Texas" is mentioned someone has to crack off about how there isn't a single redeeming value to any kind of hunt in the whole state. Texas, like any other place, has good and bad. I know a 17 year old kid who spent 3 YEARS hunting a specific buck. When he finally got it it scored 206. And that deer was as natural as it gets. Alot of the guys on this board would have passed out hiking the canyons he did. But I can promise you that if I had posted that pic some self-appointed guru would have said his daddy bought it for him in some pen where he just had to pull the trigger. 'Cause after all it was in Texas. I just wish people would get their facts straight before spreading crap. You notice I haven't commented on peoples opinions of baiting, shooting out of truck windows, etc. Thats because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. What I have taken exception to is putting me, my family, my friends, and neighbors in the category of slob hunters because of where we live, when the person making the comment has no idea how we hunt, or the ethics we have. And not only that, but has no interest in even finding out the truth. Bottom line is it doesn't really matter anyways. Down here, we know the truth. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Absolutley without question!!! The Texas bashers know not of what they speak. I've only been here a year but it has been a great experience thus far. I don't plan on staying here but sorry Arthur, I'll be back to hunt every year!

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
My sis at the age of 14 won a free hunt in TX on a huge ranch. She went and hunted 1 day than said she would not kill a deer that way.She stated 20 to 25 deer came to the feeded she set on.She allso said it was like killing a cow at the feedder. She set in a HUGE set house with windows, stove.and even a spot to lay down if to tired to hunt.Than on the 1st day a very nice buck came in and she was told not to shoot it.That it was not a buck they wanted to remove from the heard. This was all for a TV show.Set up to tell all about this ranches hunting.Well gess what they did not even put any of the things she said on the air.
I know many people will say how she had a chance in a life time. Well gess what they are roung. My sis has now killed 4 nice deer 3 with the gun 1 bow kill. She learned how to hunt and was not handed the deer.so here 1st 2 bucks where little.but her last 2 where very nice deer. One scored 140 the 2nd was even nicer just over 150. I would hunt the ranch if they just let ME go hunt it and not make me set in a HOME or hold my hand. I am going to hunt TX this year.I am hunting where no one will say crap about what one to shoot.I cant walk up on a feed [there is no feeders] and shoot some cow .And when I see a house I will be sleeping in it not hunting out of it. Just so some people know I have killed 5 deer over 170 with my bow.So I do not shoot nubs. I allso would not hunt for elk on indain land. Allthough the elk are not drawn to feeders, you cant drive your ttruck around looking for them. And for feeder being just like fields. How nuts.feeder 30 foot feeding spot.fields are some times MILES long.Where I live the hole field yealds food not just 30 foot. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Elk, that is my point exactly. There are places like that in Texas. There are also places that rival the best free range hunting that can be found anywhere for any price. The point is it is up to the hunter to decide what is for them. I just don't like being categorized by someone who doesn't even know how I hunt.
|
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
You are right Critr-gitr
There is people every where that will take the eazy way out.No difrant for some guy driving around for 5 days up here in MT to kill his elk. TX has some real nice land for hunting.Every where I go I like to hunt the more open spots with roleing hills. With tons under brush. It takes a good hunter to ground kill any animal here. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
so you texans come on here and bash me for declining the hunt....that was the question..(who cares what my reasons where, that was not the ?).....just goes to show you the kind of people you are....i didnt bash texas or the people that live there....just declined the hunt......whos the idiot..........
sorry...not me |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
I do not think that all of TX is high fenced penned raised deer. I did however say no to the free hunt. I do not think I would enjoy that kind of hunting............
The problem I have with Texas and the "Texas syle" of hunting is the attitude out of the state and the pioneering of the "paid hunt". I also have problems with the emphasis on the size of the buck that TX seems to hang it's hat on. Money my friends will be the death to hunting as we once knew it and Texas has has a big influence in it IMO. Texans stands strong on "It's bigger and better in Texas" and prove it in the size deer the have and the size of the Ranches thay have.If it is a way of life down there to hunt the way the do, that's fine. I just hope and pray that the emphasis on the monster buckand it's associtation with the almighty dollar does not continue to spread throughout the rest of the United States. It has to stop sometime, or else you have to be very wealthy in order to afford to hunt. Remember when it was simple?? [&o] |

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Wait....was this an offer to hunt for free or an offer to be on the TV mini-series?
Far too much drama on this thread. Oh, and was airfare included? |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Boy you texas boys are sensitive. Remind me of my wife.
... Yes I would take the hunt since it is not a high fenced operation. ...I do want to say this: comparing baiting to crop fields is stupid as hell. You would have to be a complete dumb ass to comparea 30 ft baitpile tomiles of crop fields. That one blew my mind. ... I just hope Kansas never becomes like Texas.I don't pay to hunt. And I have sole access tosomeof the bestland in the state. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
As long as were having so much fun with you Texans:D
Any body see "King of the Hill" when Bobby Hill went deer hunting? It was great! |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
If we were all that sensitive, we'd cut the pipelines and let all you other states find your OWN oil and gas.;)

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Superdave,
Go back and read my posts. I never bashed anyone for declining the hunt. I could give a crap about that, hunt where you want, how you want, within the boundaries of the law. It just doesn't matter to me. The one that got me started and that I take exception to was the "Everyone in Texas shoots deer over bait out the window of their pickup". Piss on that. Read what I wrote and not what you expected to hear. Anyways, I'm done with this thread, no further comments. Edited to add that the post I am referring to was Bawanajim on page 7, so put yourself in whatever category you like. Have a nice day! |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
This is great!!! I like giving you Texas boys a hard time.
Arthur, way to have an ace in the hole with the oil, you got me there.[8D] Josh, I don't give a rats furry white a$$ what you say, you simply cannot compare crop fields with baiting. I may be ignorant about south texas, I hope it stays that way, just kidding.Take a trip to Kansas someday, hell you can come hunt with me.[&:] I will show you crop fields of 100 acres or more. bawanajim... That episode was hilarious. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Hey Criter If you want to quote me get it right ! You will not find that I said "everyone" in Texas Shoots penned deer over bait from the truck. I did make a mistake saying they shoot from the window ,most truck hunters shoot from a roof rack.[:@]
One of your own asked why people have a bad taste about hunting in Texas. I gave three reasons. It does suprise me how many Texans get pissed off when people mention how some hunt down there. If there is nothing wrong with shooting penned deer from a truck over bait, I don't see why it should upset any body. It is legal isn't it. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
I would take it and donate it to Make-a-wish, providing they still grant hunts as wishes. If not I would find a suitable kid in need. Not much challenge and challenge is what makes them special when they hang on the wall. I don't care much for Texas whitetails anyway as they have small bodies and their racks are bred to be long in inches but the mass is somewhat nonexistant. They look almost nothing like a wild PA whitetail. I like the rough, knarrled look of old, wild PA deer.
OOPs....just to clarify. I am talking about high cost ranch "hunting". I am sure there are plenty of Texans who hunt wild, free range chick.....er....deer. |

Great idea there is another group called " Hunt of a Lifetime " that seems to be a stand up bunch too. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
I hunted South Texas once for deer and it just wasn't for me. I can't get too excited about sitting in a shed on stilts watching a feeder or sandero sprinkled with corn. I understand if that is your only option you deal with it but it just didn't seem like deer hunting to me. I could have shot plenty of deer and did enjoy watching the javalina and bobcats etc. I would gladly hunt Texas again if it wasspot and stalk and no bait or fences. I will say that several of the locals I spoke to didn't even hunt anymore because of the insane amount of money it takes to hunt there. Even some avid deer hunters said they could only hunt every other year due to the high cost. I guess bigger isn't always better, even in Texas.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...what ever...you guys stay in texas and ill stay everywhere else......

RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
LivBucks,
They look almost nothing like a wild PA whitetail. I like the rough, knarrled look of old, wild PA deer LMAO, you have got to be kidding me. "OLD, KNARRLED, Pa Buck"???? Did I read that right? Is that one of those urban legends? In PA a buck is damn lucky to live past 2 1/2 years old, hell hes damn lucky just to make it to 2 1/2. Most of the bucks killed up there are nubbins and 4-6 pointers. Ya'll had grown men crying about the new antler restrictions because they would no longer be allowed to kill 1 1/2 year old 3 pointers. Thats pathetic. Come on, honestly have you EVER seen a mature PA buck? Other then maybe in a Field & Stream magazine?? |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Heres what a mature south Texas buck looks like. The picture was taken duringthe annual helicopter deer survey on the ranch.....

MAKE-A-POLITICALLY-CORRECT-WISH |

I would not pay that kind of money, but would not pass it up for free. Besides, my freezer is looking pretty hungry. LOL
|
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
For free?? Absolutely!!
|
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
MAn where have you ever seen 10 acre fields. That was a good joke JOSHKELLER. This shows how much you cant see past the feeder.
Maby you have garden mixed up with FARM. And as for you knowing any thing about how to find deer in or around farm fields.Any one who thinks a 10 acre field is realistic. Will have NO chance to kill a deer.Stay on your feeder good luck. |
RE: Would you take a free hunt at King Ranch?
Does the hunt fall within the guidelines set forth by P/Y? If it did then I most certainly would providing it was free and I could hunt where and how I want. I'm not into the ideal of a guide putting me in a tower hunting over bait and be back at the lodge by noon. Just not my style. I'm not saying thats the way it is there but I'm sure the weekend warriors love it since they can afford it and be back at work on monday. There is a little more to a hunt than just a kill, it just depends on whos going to do your homework, you or someone esle.
No disrespect intented, I just hunt fair chase. Bobby |
