Default I got some questions for u expierenced Bowhunters

Hi to all, This is my first post here, and probably not my last. I'm a first time bowhunter and was hoping you guys could give me some information. This will be my first year hunting deer with a bow, with anything for that matter. i've been waiting years tobowhunt and finally i only have 9 more days to wait. this year i was lucky enough to recieve a nice bow from a man i know. He used to run an archery shop and had a bow lying around that he never sold. . i've known him my whole lifeand he decided to give me the bow. It's a 2003 hoyt magnatec with intruder limbs. It's peak weight is only 50 but it's quite fast for being low poundage. He never evenshot it. I paid him back by doing work for him. Anyways i was wondering what u think max range would be. i can shoot very well with it out to 30 yards. And one more thing. He's taking me huntingand hes a great bowhunter and knows alot about it. He's 63 years old. He wanted me to ask you guys if u knew anything about sonic broadheads? They are made by The American broadhead company. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

P.S Nine days is a long time.....I can't sleep already.

Welcome to the boards and enjoy your first season! As far as effective range, it is whatever you feel comfortable with AND accurate out to. Only shoot to your effective distance. Every person's is different, and it doesnt matter if that is 15 yards or 60 yards. Remember it is the animal you need to respect so dont push yourself. Never heard of the broadheads.

THE GENERALLY ACCEPTED RANGE FOR A BOW IS 50YDS. AS STATED ABOVE ONLY SHOOT AS FAR OUT AS YOU CAN ACCURATELY SHOOT. MOST RECOMMEND SHOOTING AT A 6" PAPER PLATE, WHATEVER YARDAGES YOU CANCONSISTENTLY HIT THE PLATEARE THE ONES YOU SHOULD HAVE NO QUAMS ATTEMPTING ON THE REAL THING. ALSO NEVER HEARD OF THOSE B/HEADS. MY RECOMMENDATION IS NOT TO GO CHEAP HERE AS THEY TEND NOT TO BE CONSISTENT IN WEIGHT. FOUND THIS OUT ONE TIME WHEN I WEIGHED SOME AND THERE WERE SEVERAL GRAINS DIFF. IN ALL OF THOSE I WEIGHED.

30yds is plenty.I generally don't even think of shooting over that, but there are alot of guys that won't even hesitate.I would just make sure I had a good set of arrows, and a very sharp broadhead.Honestly I would stay away from mech.heads with a low poundage bow.Sorry I haven't had any experience with the sonic broadheads.I am shooting rocky mountain Titaniums, and they are plenty sharp. What arrows are you currently shooting?

Most people havent lol. They are wierd looking things. They are 85 grains and have a 1 inch cut. I can shoot them just like my field point and i mean exactly. . The blades lock in by tightening a nut in the back.

Heres the picture

Lol Don't worry they arent cheap. They are cut on contact and have great penetration. Like a dummy i shot at my cheap foam target that was brand new and put a hole in it first shot at 25 yards. It stuck in the tree and i had to dig it out. it didnt have any damage but was dull. So thats a pratice head. Btw They are razor sharp i canshave the hair off my arms with them. Thanks for the help.Im sure one of u boys later will have shot them or heard of them. They just came out this year. Thanks Matt

welcome to the board and welcome to the world of bowhunting. wipe the guns down with oil and put em up cuz you probally wont want to use them any more...........lol. those broadheads look nice but I havent seen em yet but they look like they would do some serious damage. It took me 7 yrs to bag a deer with a bow, but I taught myself. Glad to see someone is teaching you what he knows and helping you along the way. I wish you luck this yr and enjoy.

Not to shoot you down or anything but I've had real real bad experience out of my bow with the ABC liberty's. I shoot a bowtech liberty. I haven't seen them fly well out of any bowtech, and I've seen the shot out of the liberty, allegiance, justice, and mighty might. I don't know why they just don't do it, no matter what the arrow, fletch, combination is. I think it's probably just my bow shoots too fast for that particular broadhead. Just haven't worked for me, but that's not to say they won't work for you.

The libertys are slightly different. they are wider at 1 3/16th" compared to the sonic 85s at 1". The guy I'm hunting with tryed one of my broadheads and said they shot at point of aim so he purchased the libertys for his bow. He shoots a fast bow too. It's a parker force multiplier. He said that they dont shoot as well as the sonics because they catch air. He tuned his arrows and he got them to shoot alright but not likesonics. All bows are different so who knows? I can't wait till the season opens the 15th. After working all summer in the woods with him he said i payed it off. i feel like i stole it because i worked on stuff for hunting. We repaired blinds cleared deer trails and other stuff like that. I like doing those things so i felt like i didnt work at all. It was the most fun job ive ever had. And i'm gonna keep helping him with whatever he needs. He even tuned my bow gave me a dozen easton redlines and helped me sight my bow in. He went as far as buying my broadheads. He even offered to loan me the money for my license but i refused. With out him i wouldnt be hunting because me nor my dad has the money to afford stuff like that. There are five kids in my family and moneys tight. The guys my hero and always has been. Hes like my grandpa. My dad doesnt hunt so without anyone to teach me i'd be out of luck. Wow lol....im getting kinda mushy. Anyways u get my point. I'm seriously pumped for deer season i can't sleep so i decided to right an essay for u guys to read lol. I bet my teachers wish i would do it for them. Anyways good luck to all u guys and gals this year. Thanks Matt

Good luck to you!You are very fortunate to have this gentleman take an interest in you,he sounds like a very decent person and a credit to the hunting community. It is great to hear your enthusiasm, you will not be dissapointed any time you spend in the woods with a bow in your hands is time well spent.
I don't have any experience with those broadheads,I have seen them advertised but that is about it.
Your effective range is just that "your effective range" I do have my opinions on long shots, that the archer may be very capable but you cannot control what the animal does between the time you release the arrow and the time it arrives at the animal.Work hard on your shooting, but work harder on your hunting ability and you will be fine.
Keep us posted on your experience's!Have a great time and good luck again!
