Illinois checks in deer via phone

If you are planning on taking in a set of antlers and skull cap then you will have to have the tag attached to the antlerswith the conformation numbers on it.So your cap and all willl have to have the corrct antlerless tag on it with the conformation numbers on it.
Yes it will make it easier for people to cheat and such. But I do think that those who have been caught before will be checked on a regular basis. If they think someone is suspicious they will send a dno officer out to check the deer themselves. Some will get away and some will not.We will just have to see how the first season goes.

We just lost an important part of our tradition!
Who else looked forward to going to the check stations to see what others got? I know I did....especiallyfirearm season.
I actually would go to the check stationswhen others in our party got deer and I didn't, just so I could see some of the big busters others guys got.
Where did you get him? Did you see any other deer? Where they chasing doesyet? Tell me about the big one that got away, etc.
We allliked seeing the look in the faces and eyes of youngsters with their first deer. And we all made sure to pat them on the back to encourage them for future ethical hunts.
Now, say hello to the impersonal phone and internet.
Illinois has money for biketrails (at the expense of hunters tax dollars), but we do not have money to keep the tradition alive???
BIG MISTAKE!
No wonder why hunter numbers (including NEW, young hunters) continue to decline!

Poachers are poachers no matter what system is in place. I think some of the responsibilty falls on us as hunters to police ourselves a little and call in those that are trying to skirt the law.

They went to this system in MD as well. The numbers will definatly be skewed this year. Bottom line is most hunters will not call in the deer unless it is one that they take to abutcher or one that they plan totake to the taxidermist.

One thing I do like about it is that in my area there is only one station within 20 miles and during bow season it closes before dark. It's also closed on Sundays. How do you check in a deer when the station is closed? Now I can just call it in.

By the way, we all know that the cheaters will ALWAYS find a way to cheat....
From my understanding, you just have to register at a sepperate place to get your pin. I have heard that they are free. I have never heard anything about charging for them...for now.

Not a good idea as far as I am concerned. I agree with DeerSlayer, too many things will go unchecked by this method and false reporting could cause big problems down the road concerning deer population #'s.

No more little cards to fill out.
