This is a wildly debated issue on these particular messageboards. Without knowing your particular setup, it would be very difficult to established a positive answer to your particular needs. It sounds by the success you've had with them on deer sized animals that you shoot an adequate setup but as you've mentioned, elk are alot bigger animals with heavier ribs. Many here are strongly against a mechanical head on elk sized animals and there are many western guides and even one state that ban them entirely for use in their presence. There are also those that have successfully taken elk with mechanical heads. I personally think mechanicals have their place in the hunting community with adequate setups for their use. Unfortunately too many bowhunters today use them as a cruch to a mistuned bow and they are not getting the performance out of either the bow or the broadhead they particularly choose.

Are mechanicals adequate for elk? Yes, depending upon the archer and the bow setup but for most average Joe hunters, no they are not. IMHO

I agree with Rob...but.

Some mechanicals may be fine for larger game but IMO you need a ton of ke for a pass through.

If I were set on a mechanical for elk I would look at some of the smaller cutting diameter heads out there.

The Rocket Steelhead comes to mind but there are others that will do a good job with a well tuned set up.

Do a search on the topic as 5 shot has done many tests on mechanicals and his word means a lot.

Rob said it very well. My personal opinion is that mechanicals were made to be used on deer size game. Their are some tough deep penetrating ones, but even the toughest mechanical heads that I have tested don't even come close to the strength of the mid range to top of the line fixed blade heads. Some mechanicals actually penetrate as well as a fixed blade head, but they still have &quot;weak&quot; points. All I can say is I never recomend them when asked, but for those who insist their are only two that penetrate well enough for me to consider.

I shoot rocket broadheads and as long as you have enough kinetic energy you can take any size game with them 65# of k/e will be more than adequate go to www.bowjackson.com and select the k/e calculator and punch in your arrow weight and arrow speed and see how much energy you are shooting.Also go to www.rocketaeroheads.com and just look at some of the game that was taken with mechanicals including the world record bull elk.Some people bash mechanical heads I dont bash any type of broadheads what you shoot is your own preference.Out of my own experience with mechanicals I get larger exit wounds and better blood trails.Just let the facts speak for themselves.Good luck

I believe Rob covered best, however I do think that a well placed
mech. broad head on any animal with the right force behind it can bring any animal down.

if u shoot the mech...go with the NAP or the steelhead. if u really want a great head...shoot the muzzy. muzzy is the best on the market, but that is not saying the others arent great
