Who here hunts public ground?

I have a lot of private land I hunt, but I still hunt some public and WIHA lands every year, mainly because I know some spots that have little to no pressure, and produce big deer. But overall, I hunt them mainly when I am after mule deer instead of whitetails, here in Kansas.

The majority of my hunting is on public land or public accessible timber company ground. There is enough of it out west to find a quiet spot off the beaten path.
Rifle seasons get pretty wicked, I dont like the traffic and noise, but archery season is peaceful.
I hunt a couple smaller private land pieces as well. They are 300 and 400 acres spots. One the land owner lets about anyone to hunt the other not many get access.

Depending where I am in my state. I like to hunt my own land but also like to get out and hunt the big woods. Nice thing about Northern New England is there is very little hunting pressure. I really like the solitude of big woods.
Best of all the big woods, although owned by paper companies is open access.

Out here its mainly private property (state) but the canals that run through most of it, although owned by the state, are considered public and you can hunt on it.

I (bow only)hunt public land about 98% of the time. I harvest at least 1 doe off public land every year.
I have power day's off (wed/thur) usually have the place to myself but the few times I've gone out on the weekend is when I run into other hunters.

I have only hunted deer on public land once. There are tons of deer down here, but they are all small. I want to shoot a buck 6 points or bigger, or a nice big doe. The only problem is the hunters will shoot any legal deer. (4 point buck, or a doe) That ruins my self-imposed standards. I am fortunate enough to have several hundred acres of private land to hunt. I am the only one that hunts on it. I wish a few of you guys lived closer to me. I would love to share some of my land. The only way that I can shoot a deer would be to hunt private land. If you have self-imposed standards then you would do better hunting on private land. If you can get your deer on public land then that is a reward. The deer you shot made it through several gun seasons only to be taken by a bow. That would be very rewarding.

I have 650 acres of private land to hunt and I still put in for about 5 quoata hunts a year on public land. Some of the public land down here in Florida is better than private, but you have to draw for the tag to hunt it for a few days. Well worth it and some of them are a sure draw. More tags than applications.

I hunt public land about 90% of the time here in Maryland. It's hard to find private land that you can hunt due to several reasons:
Land development,
Tree huggin land owners,
Other hunters leasing land,
Property owners that have been burned by hunters in the past.
I have not had any problems harvesting deer on public land. Last year I passed on several dozen shots because I was hunting a big 10 point but never got a shot at him. In Howard County, Maryland, there is an unlimited doe tag so I think I will be donating a lot of meat to the FHFH this season.
I am also lucky that I have a friend who owns 11 acres surrounded by woods and farms. We can hunt on his neighbors 20 acres with bow only and have to be out by 10am but it deffinately is nice to have the extra acres.
