Like justabout every aspect of bowfishing, its a matter of personal preference. Many trad bowfishermen prefer shooting off the shelf because of its inherent anti-snag qualities and simplicity.

If you are looking for an actual rest to mount on a fishing bow, there are a fair amount of styles to choose from. Most are a form of roller, hook, eye, or 'V', although some guys get by with a simple flipper. There is even a Whisker Biscuit for fishing. Most of these restsare quite inexpensive compared to the ones you may use for target shooting or hunting.

Check out some from F&D archery, AMS, and see lots of pics at Sully's.

Hog Killer,
Do you shoot fish now?
What kind of bow do you have/want?
Where do you bowfish?
What do you normally catch in your area?

I shoot off the shelf and with no sight. IMO its much faster than a rest and sight and everything. I just cant my bow and shoot. Instinctive shooting is the key to those quick shots when carp are spooky and you have little time.WCL

I shoot the Dream rest on my Coyote from F&D Archery and shoot the Whisker Biscuit on my fish hawk and my son shoots the fish hook on his fish hawk.

I was thinking of getting a Bowfishing Replacement Biscuit - Do you have to load your arrow from the front?

deertale, I shoot a recurve off the shelf, but I believe that is correct about the "biscuit". I have heard that someone cut a slot at about "11 Oclock"to load the arrow. I think it would be plenty fast once you got used to it.

I load my biscuit from the front for bowfishing. After doing it in thedark all night for 8 hours straight you getvery used to it. In fact when I setup my hunting bow with a biscuit that loaded from the side, I still naturallyinserted my arrowthrough the front.

On my recurve I made an epoxy rest. Love it!
