Big Country

Sometimes reducing powder charges 5-10 grains stops the (1) drifter shot. Other times, using less swabbing cleaner between shots or adding a 2nd dry patch stops it. Also... make sure you ramrod hand pressures for loading are always exactly the same... also powder-pouring has to be the same. Don't pour slowly one time & fast the next.

ORIGINAL: green01

i was using 90 grains of goex clear shot. i found out that a round ball shoots very good out of the inlines with a 209 primer. they will touch holes at 80 yards.
I shot some powerbelts (348gr.) with 90gr. of Clear Shot and found the bullets to be keyholing at 80 yards. I talked to CVA and they said that Clear Shot lights off too slow (has a very slow pressure rise at ignition) which does not upset the base of the powerbelt bullet sufficiently to engrave the rifling which causes instability in the bullet. I think if you use either 295gr. or 348gr. Powerbelts with Pyrodex, real black powder, American Pioneer Powder, Black Mag3, or even 777 (which is not my favorite powder due to hard fouling in my rifle); you will get decent accuracy out of the Powerbelts but keep the loads below 120gr. powder equivalent. (The slow light off also explains why you are getting decent accuracy out of round balls as they do not strip out of the rifling like they would with a sharper pressure rise powder)
