I am shooting and older T/C Renegade flintlock and I have been using the regular T/C flints I was wondering what size flint to buy for this rifle, I see 5/8 listed as the correct size from October Country but I have also seen people saying to use the widest flint that will fit the frizzen, what size do you suggest and what are the benefits?
Thanks and Merry CHRISTmas!

PS: If the lock in your rifle is several years old, be aware that TC has made significant design improvements in their flint lock assemblies and reliability is 100% perfect.
If yours in an early style, I'd suggest you mail the lock to TC Service Manager Tim Pancurak with a nice memo asking if he could "make your lock more reliable", etc.
At a minimum, they'll install the various improved parts, and possibly just send you an entire new lock assembly...no charge under TC's lifetime warranty.

i use 3/4 in my tc hawken....same lock i think....but i find some are a HAIR to long....i have to take my lock or gun with me when buying flints....i even fit a lyman frizzen to the lock....and its still the same thing.....i think my hammer is bent just a hair or something....i heard of people messing with the hammers to get a better spark....heating and bending them a certain way......so the flint will take more metal off id guess....and i guess it works....it makes sparks.....i called TC to see if theyd update mine and they said replace the frizzen and touchhole myself......i had the old touchhole with a screwdriver slot and just a hole....i got the new ones with a cone and a allen key hole...and a lyman frizzen.....cant complain...goes off like a champ...

What I do for 3/4" flints in my TC locks is to cut or punch a hole in the bend of the flint leather, and by eliminating leather in this specific area, the flint will slide back further against the jaw screw and eliminate the need to hand pick 3/4" flints.
Another good alternative is to use a Mizzy wheel to notch the back edge of the flint.

That's it? I have an older TC Hawken, about 25 years old, with the old stuff on it you describe. So I just send it in to them?

If you call them, they may be less inclined to deal with something...but if they open a box, and it has one of their locks and a nice memo with it, they'll fix or replace it and send it back, no charge...done it for me on numerous occasions over the years

yep i called them and they told me they wont do anything because its probably frizzen wear....told them i tried numerous flints and made sure its all clean and oil free and it doesnt spark reliably and wehn it does its slow ignition....someone here told me to tell them a bunch of stuff to get it updated....it worked fine......but i fixed it myself.....and it goes off like a champ.....barely noticably....FABOOM!!!!! love that sound.......love the smoke clouds......cant wait for monday!
