I have a T/C Hawkin and have always used Goex FF with good results, but now it is hard to find in the local gun shops.
Can someone advise me on what you use as a replacement and the amount of grains of powder I should start with. I have always shot a .535 round ball,.010 patch and 100 gr.of Goex FF. Is the 777 the way to go? Whats its equivalent to the Goex FF ?
Sorry about this same post in another fourm,I was in the wrong place.

Hi Sam
I prefer 777 over Pyrodex because it cleans easier - it's less corrosive -- more powerful & smells alot better outdoors with no smell indoors while cleaning.
Goex powder loads are very similar to Pyrodex but with 777, you may want to try around 80 grains to more closely match your Goex shot groups.
Goex can be purchased online at a decent price with a 5-can minimum purchase to help cover the $20 HAZMAT FEE for transporting it (explosive) to your front door. The price with HAZMAT included is only $14 per can that way.

sam52 Triple Se7en will work real good for you as will Pyrodex RS as long as your not talking a T/C Hawkins Flintlock. If it is a flintlock then you would not want to use the other powders....
I shoot Triple Se7en out of my CVA Mountain Stalker and with 80 grains of T-7 a wonderwad and a .530 patched round ball with a .018 pillow tick patch it is a great shooting rifle.
good luck

Thanks cayugad , I check out the Hodgdon site and they give some starting loads for my set up, so I think next week when I hit the range I will start with about 70 gr. and work up.
This all caught me by surprise with ELK season coming up the second week in Sept. here in Colorado.
I was so use to the Goex and had a good supply for a number of years now its all gone.
But what I have read on this site and others including the Hodgdon site,I see the 777 produces more energy and it is alot cleaner.

Triple Se7en cleans up with water actually. I have never had any problem with my sidelocks igniting the stuff. I shot three deer last year using it. I hunted on rainy days and even in the snow, and it worked perfect.
You do want to get out and shoot some of it. I think it acts different then Goex. Also when I was shooting round ball and patch I had to go with a wonderwad between the T-7 charge and the patch because it was smoking (and I mean smoking) the patch. Triple Se7en to me anyway, really cracks instead of booms when you fire it, and the recoil is different. Actually in my inlines I really like the Triple Se7en. The price the stores are charging for the stuff is unreal right now ($26.00/pound), so I order Goex and Swiss by the half case on line since I do a lot of shooting.
If you decide to go with Pyrodex, save your self a few dollars and go with the RS instead of the Select. They claim the select is more uniform and better but to be honest I can not tell the difference. Pyrodex is a nice propellant to use....

cayugad, I tried Prodex a few years back and just could not get tight groups out of the stuff no matter what combanation patch, ball and grain I tried. I'm looking foward to trying the 777 and bought a pound today along with some ox-yoke wonder wads just in case it blows out the patch.
