Default New bullet

Yesterday I cast some bullets from my Lee 90373 mold. It is designated as a .457"-340 gr flat point bullet and cast a pure lead bullet with an average weight of 359 gr.
After casting I pan lubed with a homemade lube of 45% beeswax, 45% Crisco and 10 percent heavy mineral oil then sized them down to .451". As a check, I drilled one out a bit and installed a 3" deck screw. After tapping it into the bore with my ball starter and pulling it back out I found that the rifling was nicely engraved into the bullet.
I'm thinking these will be really good shooters based on the way Ed Mehlig's 350 gr HPs shot. (cast weight of about 370 gr). Range results to follow (hopefully later today)

Well I just returned from the range. Because of the area I shoot was muddy I couldn't set my target at the normal 50 yard distance because of a huge puddle I had to set it out at 75 yards. Anyway, I shot 5 shots with the same 85 gr charge off Goex FFFg I use with my paper patched bullets. The only difference between shooting these and the paper patched (as well as Ed's 350 gr bullets) was I used a .50 cal. 1/8" felt wad in lieu of a .45 cal. I think I may have been pushing them a little too hard so I'll likely cut down to about 70 grs.
These bullets show a lot of promise because all 5 shots formed into a nice 2" cluster. I did try one shot using a fiber wad but that went out of the group about 1" lower and 1" to the right. The group center was about 2" to the right of where my paper patched bullets hit which is no biggie.
I thought it was pretty good considering this old fart forgot his glasses!
Now that I'm happy with the way they shoot I can cast some more this winter and come spring I can play with different charges and powders. I'll cast enough that I won't ever have to cast again for the ML and cast others with some added tin to shoot out of my .45-70s.

I'd love to see a photo of these pointed missiles.
Did they stabilize adequately? Any keyholing?
I've heard of drilling out to make a hollow point but you've got a new twist ther, man!
I've got the same mold and it drops about the same weight. So far I haven't had any recovered bullets to study mushrooming. All complete pass throughs.
Thanks for the idea

I only drilled it an put the screw in so I could pull it back out of the bore and see how it engaged the rifling. I didn't shoot it with the screw in.....That would be insane.
