Default Shooting patched bullets

I received some paper patched bullets from another member to try in my .45 GM LRH Hawken barrel before I went and sunk some more money into another bullet mold.
Using his suggestion as a starting load (64.5 gr of Pyro P by weight) and then the same volume of FFFg I shot 2 groups at 50 yards. The Pyro P put 3 shots into 1" and the FFFg just under 1 1/2". Sights were a Williams FP peep and a FO front sight.
Being pleased with those groups I then set the target out to 100 yards. Using the same loads the groups were both about 2 1/2" for 3 shots. The drop from 50 to 100 yards was right around 3"-4".
After coming home and thinking on it I installed a globe front sight onto the barrel and put in a fine crosshair insert. That should improve the "aimability" of the rifle with these old eyes.
I'm still amazed that such a loose fitting bullet could be so accurate. By loose I mean that if it weren't for the veggie wad under the bullet the weight of the ramrod would be almost enough to seat the bullet! Now I have an accurate bullet without any barrel leading.
I still have some more load tinkering to see if I can tweak it some.

I think you will be able to shrink those groups a bit. But in reality anything under 2" is a very accurate load. Can you install Lee Shavers BPCR inserts?

Ron those are the same inserts that the Pedersoli globe sight came with . I currently have the fine cross hair insert in for more precise target shooting but will likely switch to the heavier cross hair or blade for hunting. I was having a bit of trouble with the bead front sight. Not sure if it was the lighting or what. I think I may have to start shooting with my glasses on!
With those inserts held in place by pressure from the knurled screw I added just a tiny drop of Loctite on the threads to hold it in place. I wouldn't want it to come loose and have the insert drop out during a hunt.

I have been using the Lyman 17 series of globes for about a dozen years. The inserts that came with the Lyman are pathetic at best. When I switched to the Lee Shavers it was like night and day difference.
My son uses the fine cross hair for his rifles. I like the medium pin for mine. I do paint the inside of the globe white to allow more light. I also paint the dot on my pin. My son doesn't like the inside of the globe to be white. It is a personal preference. I have never had the threaded part back out. I have had the peep back out and I check that regular.
Keep us posted how the shooting comes along.

I definitely will Ron. BTW I was thinking about cutting all those paper patches and I started snooping around on Ebay. I just purchased a paper cutter for 14.99 with free shipping!

One other thing I did was go to the Dollar Tree and pick up a sheet of hot pink poster board. I cut it into four 11"x11" squares and the remaining piece into two 5"x5" pieces. Those should be great for seeing against a cardboard background out yonder.

Good Price!!
I would go with a sizer that is .448 A friend of mine has that one and it is a little tighter than mine is. He says it is still pretty loose.
I have hunted with that bullet at .446 for a very long time. When I am carrying it I try no to carry it a lot muzzle down. I also don't ride with it in the truck or ATV muzzle down. When on the ATV I have a pack that I lay on the rack. Then I lay the gun on the pack and the muzzle is slightly up. Every once and a while I check it. I have never had the bullet off the powder. But I know it could so I watch for it.

Ron I'm going to try them first without sizing. Just wrapping. I've been messing with .451" and paper patching them for the .45-70. I ran some through the .457" sizer and some not. There isn't much difference in them except the tail is flatter.
I found that if I give the paper a little spritz of alcohol before I wrap, when it dries it holds its shape on the bullet as well as if I size them.

You don't want that paper sticking to the bullet. Your group will blow out bad.
If you wrap a .446 bullet with two wraps of 9# Onion skin you will have a finished product of .452 That is not going to go down the barrel.

Ron I guess I forgot to mention that I will size them to .443" before wrapping. That will put them at .449". As for the alcohol spritz, its so light that the patch is just about dry before I even finish wrapping. Its just enough dampness to start to curl the paper. And without sizing afterward, it should come off immediately after leaving the muzzle.
The .448" bullets are plenty loose and I'm sure the .449" will be also. If not, and my groups open up, I will get me another sizing die.

You should be fine with .449 I think.
