Default Had A Problem Knocking Hogs Dead

All the blinds that i shoot wild hogs from are at the edge of the woods or in the woods. Got to knock them dead or they are gone out of sight. i shot two 250 pound boars recently and both ran off. Both shots were near the end of legal shooting light. i don't go stumbling around looking for wounded hogs at night.

Those hogs were found the following mornings. One was hit in both lungs and made it 150 yards to the creek before expiring. The other was was hit through one lung and the bullet nicked the heart. Hog was located about 90 yards from where it was shot.
Both were shot with the 250 grain SST bullet.

My Encore and the excellent .452 300 grain XTP magnum bullet knocks hogs DRT with boring regularity. But i wanted to use hard cast bullets.

Gun: .54 Fire Hawk
Scope: Grand Slam
Sabot: Red
Cap: CCI magnum #11
Powder: 100 grains Black MZ
Bullet: .452 330 grain hard cast.

Put the target at 50 yards. The zero of the gun was not changed. It will still be dead on with patched round ball.

Minute of hog. i seldom get a shot longer than 50 yards.

That is why I shoot hogs in the head or neck!

I got on the hard cast bandwagon many years ago with my .41 Mag Ruger Bisley. The Beartooth 250 grain Long Flat Nose (LFN) bullets were incredibly accurate giving me four-inch 100 yard groups from that scoped handgun. But I was totally dissatisfied with their performance on deer. I'm a heart/lung shooter and every deer shot in the boiler room with that hard cast flat nose bullet ran and ran. Long tracking jobs. They are very effective with bone breaking shoulder joint shots, which put them on the ground, but often needed a second mercy shot. For my kind of hunting a soft lead .50 caliber round ball in the lungs was way more effective than a hard cast conical.

Falcon, I've nailed quite a few hogs with hard cast in my .45 Colts. As Semi pointed out, they are damn near impossible to beat on penetration but they just don't expand to create serious internal damage. As you have figured out by now I'm sure, hogs, like deer, can be a pretty dang tough critter to put down right on the spot without a CNS interruption. You will find those hard casts to be some serious bone breakers so if you are dead set on using them, go for the shoulder joints or head and neck shots and you will see them doing the nose dive shuffle. Anything else and you will see them going even further than they have been.

Yep, they do a nose dive. i have used the 280 grain .430 wide meplat hard cast bullets on hogs. It busts through the shoulders of a 300 pound hog and keeps on going. Went with the .452 330 grain wide meplat bullet in the .54 because i had no .430 sabots in that caliber.
