jsteurrys requested this bullet be tested. It was shot through carpet, plywood, water jugs, and into a phone book. Range was 25 yard. Load was 80g Blackhorn.

The photo shows the jugs in order as when they were smucked. First jug has a big tear, second jug was flattened, and jugs 3 & 4 have small tears around the entry/exit holes. The fifth jug has holes in and out, and the bullet penetrated near half way into the phone book, and was found on the ground where the book is parked in the photo.

The bullet didn't expand much; it weighs 287 grain.

Tests like this show how inconsistent they really are.
Ron, with 105gr pyrodex RS and a 250gr thor, what kind of FPS do think that bullet would have at 175 yards? Not trying to argue, but an honest question for the next step.

Ron, you have any idea what the velocity is on them at that load? I bought a couple packs of them, they shoot absolutely fantastic out of my .50 TC and was actually going to use them this year but after seeing this I aint so sure. Of course I will be shooting quite a bit hotter than you were but I have a cull buck on one of the properties that I have my sights set on and I have a feeling from the way he is patterning right now my only shots will be between 100 to 130 yards. I didn't chrony this one but my load is 120 BH. so it will probably be hitting (at the 130 mark) at about the same velocity you hit at 25 with that 80 BH load or thereabouts.

This test is going to make me redo the 250g T-EZ i think. The 250 did way better expanding with 80g powder, and it seemed like this bullet should have expanded more. This result really surprised me. Perhaps the 290 is a way stronger than the 250?

250 Thor
Pyrodex Select
90 - 1784
100 - 1858
120 - 2031
150 - 2148
So I am in the 1860's most likely at the muzzle with 105gr pyrodex.
My point being, this 250gr thor expanded to just under 1" diameter after it hit a buck at 175 yards.
By some theory, this bullet should have lost its energy at that yardage and penciled through.
