Mostly true, except for PB's. They get so much negative feedback it would be hard for someone new to miss it. I even say not to use them.
PB's and PRB's get the most negative feedback, and ironically they've killed the most game. :) Just saw your post Pete. Was typing at the time. |

Sorry to interrupt the drama, but I was just wondering: what would you guys suggest as an alternative to the powerbelts? Once upon a time, long long ago, I helped one of my cousins get his .54 cal traditions muzzleloader set up, and I grabbed the only thing I could find on the shelf locally: 348 grain(I think) Powerbelt Aerotips and some pyrodex pellets. He's killed a bunch of deer with no issues that I know of. However, he's rather uninitiated and relies on me for gun advice. If there's something better hat he should use, I thought I might get him switched over, before he does have a problem. Unfortunately, muzzleloading rifles is one of those topics I don't know much about. Any suggestions?

I was referring to a 245 gr. PB HP because I thought that was the one referred to that experienced bullet blow up.
Just saw your post Pete. Was typing at the time. The more I think about it. I'm going to use the Platinum 300gr for the deer hunt. If I decide to go for an OTC elk hunt ill switch to the Platinum 338gr. Just to be on the safe side. Even Randy Wakeman who hates CVA and Powerbelts recommends the larger PB's. |

Ron, just out of curiosity: Is that supposed to be a 245 gr.?
One of the reviewers I read stated the PB HP showed bullet to bullet weight discrepencies. |
Sorry there CJ I think your question got a bit overlooked. There are a few members in this forum section that have much more experience with .54 caliber than I. My main experience is with .50 full bore and .45/.50 saboted. First off though, what state does he hunt in and what are the ML requirements as far as sabots vs. full bore as well as powder requirements? Need a little more info there before any of us could make a valid suggestion as to an alternative bullet for you.

It didn't get overlooked. I answered him.

LOL Duh, I forgot you where here in IL where I am. Yes saboted is legal. bullet has to be minimum .44 caliber and of an expanding design. Powder substitute is legal as well as smokeless as long as the weapon is designed for it. 1878Sharpshooter and Blackpowdersmoke are your 2 best bets for Bullet information for a .54cal smokepole. Cayugad and a couple others as well. As you have read, powerbelts wouldn't be a common recommendation from most any of us. (to put it mildly :s2: ) I'll look up the common twist rate of that rifle and put it on here for them to be able to help you further.
Edit to add:Common twist rate for Traditions models in .54cal was 1:48 |
