Got my first blackpowder deer last night just before dark. Made a good shot at 50 yards but the deer crossed over onto private property so i had to back out and get permission to continue tracking. Land owner was very nice and told me i could access and recover. Crossed over at first light and found it right away but not before the critters of the night. One hind quarter completely gone. Need to clean my gun now I guess.

I had one buck I left overnight and had the coyotes get one of the hind quarters. I also had one I shot at last light and when I tracked it in the dark it had run smack into a roaming black bear that drug it for about 35 yards before I scared it off. Both of these were archery kills.

Because of the bear, coyote and wolf population where I live, it you wound one and want the meat you better get on the track and stick to it... day or night. I tracked a bow shot deer one very cold December evening with my friend. When we found her, she'd laid down and it seemed she couldn't get up, but was laying there head up in the air, watching us. Really freaks you out when the deer are so alert. And it made me kind of sad to walk up to her and do what I had to do. But that's part of the hunting too.

I am guessing this was probably coyotes but have never seen or heard any. No bears around. When I got to her the next morning the hind quarter had been eaten up and her head and neck covered with leaves like they were trying to hide her. Can't imagine walking up on a bear dragging one off though...wow!

Congrats on the deer.
It's the same way here. i've approached deer that fell within 100 to 200 yards of my stand, only to find coyotes had beat me there. Nearly all my deer hunting is with a muzzleloader but i often have a scoped AR-15 in the truck. It's neat to set up on the gut pile and shoot coyotes.
