That goes back a long way, a book on rifle building that was written in the early percussion period recommended that a piece of hickory with the grain running strait through it be soaked in kerosene. I do not remember how long it said, but I do remember that they used a barrel, I believe it was written by a gunsmith which probably means he was doing a number of them at a time.
