Default #1 grizz with muzzy

Got this in an email today, supposed to be the biggest grizzly ever taken with a muzzleloader.

Steve West
Attached is a photo of the grizzly I shot in coastal British Columbia on June 1st... while I am still in British Columbia hunting black bears and finishing production on site we had internet service and wanted to get this sent out to everyone. As many of you knew I booked and planned this hunt to specifically go after the muzzleloader world record. I had the right guide, right area, and as it turns out - we found the right bear.

I shot the bear with one of our outfitters using the CVA Accura V2 muzzleloader, topped with the Burris Fast Fire sight and using 405 grain Powerbelt Bullets. The 150 grains of IMR White Hots pushed the load out and dropped the big bear with a single shot at 50 yards. The film is extremely solid... it green scored 26 2/16" B&C and easily eclipses the old muzzleloader world record (23 2/16" B&C) by three inches.

We will get the bear to a certified B&C scorer on August 1st for an official score and send it off for panel scoring if required. Given the massive spread between the size of this bear and the current record, we are all certain that this bear will be declared the new muzzleloader world record in the very near future.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and the Outdoor Channel for helping make this a reality!

Pretty cool on the bear.

He also wears the same clothing I do. It's called Stormkloth, and is really durable and cheap. Of course he gets his free, and I pay for mine, but the jacket and pants are $89 ea. Twin layers of fleece with a membrane in the middle simlilar to Gore-Tex.

Now if that had been a .54 cal round ball flintlock in his hands then that would be worth bragging about.

But dang that's still a big bear!

HA

Having the host of the show get mauled by a Grizzly might up the ratings too.

I pulled my copy of The Longhunters Society from 1992, the first grizzly registered was killed with a .54 caliber Hawken type rifle loaded with 120grs FF Goex...This bear was shot at a range of 100 yards and the ball was found on the off side of the bear after traveling through both lungs...

Now THAT is impressive...

I'm sure the mountain men killed a lot of grizzly's, but i'm sure they failed sometimes too.

Using a powerbelt might be more dangerous.

The journals of Lewis & Clark provide several tales of grizzly encounter. They experienced several problems with the 'White Bear'; their rifles were inadequate. It seems to me the Griz was there biggest problem, other than hunger. They were able to bluff the native with their air gun, but the Grizzly they couldn't bluff.

Just today, the Great Falls Tribune warned folk, of Grizzly wandering out on the prairie east of the Rocky Mountain Front. Last year the Dupuyer school board voted to have a fence built around the play ground of the Dupuyer school, to protect the children from wandering grizzly. Years ago back in the 1960's, when we lived in Missoula, there was a hunting season on Grizzly; they ran from people. Today, they consider a rifle report a dinner bell, and come running. Strange how litigation put a stop to common sense management of the 'white bear'.

From William Clark's journal.

May 5,1805

"In the evening we saw a Brown or Grisley beare on a sand beech, I went out with one man Geo Drewyer & Killed the bear, which was verry large and a turrible looking animal, which we found verry hard to kill we Shot ten Balls into him before we killed him, & 5 of those Balls through his lights This animal is the largest of the carnivorous kind I ever saw we had nothing that could way him, I think his weight may be stated at 500 pounds [227 kilograms].... we had him skined and divided, the oile tried up & put in Kegs for use."

May 15, 1805

"they took the advantage of a small eminence which concealed them and got within 40 paces of him unperceived, two of them reserved their fires as had been previously conscerted, the four others fired nearly at the same time and put each his bullet through him, two of the balls passed through the bulk of both lobes of his lungs, in an instant this monster ran at them with open mouth, the two who had reserved their fires discharged their pieces at him as he came towards them, boath of them struck him, one only slightly and the other fortunately broke his shoulder, this however only retarded his motion for a moment only, the men unable to reload their guns took to flight, the bear pursued and had very nearly overtaken them before they reached the river; two of the party betook themselves to a canoe and the others seperated an concealed themselves among the willows, reloaded their pieces, each discharged his piece at him as they had an opportunity they struck him several times again but the guns served only to direct the bear to them, in this manner he pursued two of them seperately so close that they were obliged to throw aside their guns and pouches and throw themselves into the river altho’ the bank was nearly twenty feet perpendicular; so enraged was this anamal that he plunged into the river only a few feet behind the second man he had compelled take refuge in the water, when one of those who still remained on shore shot him through the head and finally killed him; they then took him on shore and butchered him when they found eight balls had passed through him in different directions."

First story is funny. He couldn't spell simple words, but got
carnivorous right.

10 balls? What was the bear doing all this time?

I bet both those beares were bigger than the "new ML world record".

If you want a good read about Lewis and Clark get a copy of "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose. He is the fellow that wrote "Band of Brothers".
