The journals of Lewis & Clark provide several tales of grizzly encounter. They experienced several problems with the 'White Bear'; their rifles were inadequate. It seems to me the Griz was there biggest problem, other than hunger. They were able to bluff the native with their air gun, but the Grizzly they couldn't bluff.

Just today, the Great Falls Tribune warned folk, of Grizzly wandering out on the prairie east of the Rocky Mountain Front. Last year the Dupuyer school board voted to have a fence built around the play ground of the Dupuyer school, to protect the children from wandering grizzly. Years ago back in the 1960's, when we lived in Missoula, there was a hunting season on Grizzly; they ran from people. Today, they consider a rifle report a dinner bell, and come running. Strange how litigation put a stop to common sense management of the 'white bear'.
