Yep lots of guys use them. They dont need to be driven hard either IIRC. The jacket is fairly thin and a lot of 45/70 data/bullets are a good match for ML speeds.
This was some data i found comparing a few 45/70 458 bullet jackets.
Speer .030 estimated because its bonded
Sierra Pro-Hunter FNHP base: .020 tip: .018
Barnes Original FN .045 Barnes SS .032
Hornady HP base: .020 tip: .015
Reminghton HP base .020 tip: .015
Use a MMP Orange or a Harvester black crushrib depending on your bore.

Gm,
Thanks!
I was thinkin that they would be similar to 300 Rem. 458's but I don't see a lot of guys using them. I'm going to take some to the range in my Savage ML when this heat/humidity breaks. Goin to try some RL-7 & H4198 powder with BCR sabots.

THEN - I believe this to be a better production bullet, although it is not a .458... and assuming that you are shooting a 50 cal ML...

Sabot,
Thats some good info.
I have tried to stay with a .458 bullet since they shoot good in my Savage ML.
I have tried the Barnes Original--$$$, Horn XTP (.452),Rem 300's,etc.
I also want to try the deep curls as well.
Looking for 300 gr punch, pass thrus/blood trails. As mentioned, most shots are 150-170 tops!

Would a 300 grain .458 TMJ with a flat metplate be useful for hunting, or just for target?
Even if it didn't expand and just passed through, wouldn't a .45 wound channel be adequate to harvest deer due to having great penetration?
I thought that a flat metplate was suppose to smack hard with a fairly high shock value.
I'm just curious because I have some, but need to buy sabots.
