Removable vent liners in a production ML are under a patent protection. Henry Ball and his son own the patent. They "rent" it to Savage. That is why Knight can not sell one with the same REMOVABLE vent liner. Lehigh could because they only sold a aftermarket plug until he got on with Knight. Even SMI had to change the design and even the name of their "liner".
OK, but even if they could i don't see that happening! Ray

Bet I am older... my hunting load for the 50 is 120 grains of T7 and a 300 grain Lehigh... I have shot that combination with a 130 but started loosing accuracy so I settled on 120.

In my velocity testing... T7 vs BH in a 50 I shot the 300 grain with 130 grains of T7-2f, 3f, and BH - it was entertaining....

Yeah the guy who shot the 150gr of BH209 did it in a custom 45cal barrel with a custom full form die and resized 325gr FTX with i think a wool wad. 2300fps though was pretty impressive but probably not totally safe either. His barrel is really thick though.

I doubt even that got a full burn but it did group better than 130gr or 140grs loads. FPS deviation was also less.

BTW smokeless pressure isnt the danger in a ML, its the length of time that pressure is produced. The faster powders do spike too fast for a normal ML barrel. Most SML barrels are thicker the first 3 inches.

I am in NO WAY saying using smokeless is safe in any gun unless it is rated and approved for smokeless!!!!!

Sorry for the hijack Grouse, anyone that wants to continue can start a new thread and i will be happy to talk about it there.

sabot,

I'm 68, but because of losing sight in my right eye which is my dominant side, I had to learn to shoot left handed. With my luck it's my bad shoulder. So, i'm a bit recoil sensitive.

My load is all I can handle.

I love shooting the Hawken. 9lb gun with 80gr of Goex 2F and a PRB. It feels like a .22 compared to the Omega.

In my Knights and GMB54 i only shoot one max 120gr load of BH209 and ONLY because it shoots that combination better.

All of mine shoot best with 90-110gr of BH209 except one...maybe two. I tried a little higher once or twice in my Extreme 50 and went back to 115grs after about 5 shots. Nearly all of my DISC based guns shoot really well with 110grs depending on the bullet and sabot.

Thats plenty for nearly any big game with proper bullet selection and within your personal range limitations.

I've mentioned i've been hunting for 60 years.

I thought that would be a good clue.

Grouse I have read through this post. But would you please take a minute and explain to me why this set up for a Knight LRH is so much better than what shipped with the rifle??

I realize it does not take a disc. But is there something else that actually makes it better for the newer powders??

I am just interested in what you have to say about it. Thanks, Tom.
