Default .45-70

Does anyone know anything about this bullet? Isn't it a .45 caliber slug and the 70 refers to the grains of powder that are in a .45-70 bullet and shell casing for a .45-70 rifle? My reason for asking was to find out if it is a .45 cal. slug so I could get some .45 cal bullet - .50 cal. sabots for them.

You are correct in the bullet size and black powder charge. There were also cartrides named .45-90 and .45-120 for the same reason. However you cannot use bullets for the 45-70 in a 45/50 sabot. The bullet you need to use are for a 45 cal revolver. Reason is that 45-70 bullets (45 rifle) measure .458" while 45 pistol/revolver bullets measure .451"-.452".

And those 45 70 black powder shells are worth a lot of money to the right person!

the bullet in the middle of pic is an 405gr, .459, they are for the 45-70. planning on trying them out of my 50 (since I cast sized to 451) and my 45cal sized to 454. the orange mmp sabot or I think the crushed rib harvester will work on standard jacked 457 - 458. I did some test a few years ago on the ones I make unsized. just an shade too big for the sabot.

I have access to all of this stuff and I am wondering why he had .45-70 bullets. Would he not have to have, or have had to have had a
.45-70 rifle, and hence would have some .45-70 shell casings somewhere also?

So you are saying that the orange mmp or crush rib harveter sabot will work with this .45-70 bullet? It would state the bullet size on the sabot package right?

he may have traded or sold the rifle. with it the shells. he just had those left over and for some reason, did not go with the deal.

20 factory loads go for what now, $50 a pop?

most of the 45-70 rounds run around .457 to .458. I have an fat version.
