Default Did Some Shooting Yesterday...

First, I tried some .430 Hornady XTPs in 300gr...I started with 100grs of Goex FFF then 90 and finally 80...The taped holes are from trying different powder charges but the same bullet...It's amazing how groups come together when you hit the right powder charge...

Then I moved to .451 250gr Shockwaves, I went straight to 80grs of Goex FFF...My gun was previously sighted in 3 inches high at 100 yards with these and 90grs of Pyrodex R-S...

Since it looked like 80grs of Goex was going to be what my Knight Disc preferred I tried the .451 Hornady 250gr XTPs and 80 grs of Goex FFF...

In between, I also tried some .430 Hornady XTPs in 240gr but they didn't come together too well and my buddy wanted me to sight in his Omega...We started with Pyrodex, then tried 777 and ended up with 85grs and this group...His gun did like the .430 Hornadys in 240gr...The first 2 shots are on the left, then I adjusted his scope to the right and took 3 shots...

My intentions this year were to use either the 240gr Hornadys or the 300gr in .430 caliber...I've killed several with the Shockwaves and wanted to mix it up a bit...The problem, the 300gr .430 Hornady's are currently a bit hard to come by...I have 13 left so I may use them in the woods and the .452 Hornday 250grs for field hunting...I don't shoot past 150 yards and I'm betting they will be 2-3 inches low at that range, I'll verify at a later date...

that is some good shooting there. That 80 grain group is hard to beat. That's why loose powder is so important. Playing with powder charges can mean a 2 inch group or a 1 inch group.

It's soooo nice when you get it worked out like that. Eighty grains under a 300 XTP ought to be excellent.

I don't know your typical hunting ranges Hawkeye, but a "trajectory study" with that load ought to be real interesting. As you've probably seen from some of my posts, I like to shoot two shots each at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, & 150 yards, all on the same target. It's a real confidence builder to know exactly what's going on.

Semisane...I'm thinking the same about that 300 Hornady...The problem is, I can't find any more...I just emailed Hornady to see when they were going to make another batch...

I'm also thinking of ordering some of those 270gr Gold Dots in .430...They are a soft point, but I suspect that would also be a great bullet...

I'm trying to go with a higher BC so they will shoot a bit flatter and penetrate better...I'm just not sold on that .452 Hornady in 250gr at say, 150 yards...

I'm in NC and in the woods, typical ranges run 30-60 yards, no problem there...But, our 3 farms all have soybeans this year and I will take a 150 yard shot, but I limit myself to that...

I'll shoot them a bit more before the season, I'm just going to need to make a decision on the Hornady 300s or the Gold Dot 270s...Or even those .452 250gr Hornadys...I'm betting I can tighten that group up, just not sure of pass throughs down range with 80grs of powder...

Thank you kindly...I've got 100 coming my way, plus 100 Harvester sabots...I should be good to go for a few years...I'll adjust my scope to about 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards, confirm at several ranges and be ready for the season...

I sure appreciate you turning me on to that site, I couldn't find them in stock anywhere...I also got one of those cheap Lee .530 molds you talked about a few weeks ago...

I owe you a couple cold ones...

I'm probably splitting hairs, but at 150 yards, I'd rather have that 300 gr .430 bullet hitting them than the 250 gr .451...The latter is pretty short, just don't know about the penetration with 80grs of powder...

I share your leaning toward heavy bullets. I think they are probably a little more forgiving if you have a bad angle shot. But the 250's will more than likely do everything that needs to be done on a whitetail out to 200 yards.

Semisane...The brown truck stopped by today and delivered 100 Harvester .430 sabots and 100 .429 Hornady 300gr XTP bullets...

I sure appreciate the heads up on where to find them...I'm going to do a little shooting in the morning...

btw...I emailed Hornady about the lack of those bullets and they answered today...They plan to make some in 10-12 WEEKS...

I'd suggest now is the time to be getting stocked up on what to shoot this season...
