Two questions about mounting a scope on an X7
#1
I am still planning to shoot with the peep sight on my X7 but with all the good comments on the Simmons Prodiamond, I did a search on Ebay and ended up with one for only $24 do my door (Great deal if I do say so myself!). I think I will use it this year to figure out loads but still hunt with the peep.
So now this newbie needs to mount the scope.
1. I picked up a weaver Top Mount Base, model No. 48513. That is the aluminum one. I think Weaver also makes a steel base, No. 48520. Is the aluminum base good enough or should I go with the steel?
2. What are the recommended rings? I do not need any quick release system.
Keep in mind that I am not (at this time) planning on hunting with the scope. It will be interesting if the mount and rings end up costing several times more than the scope itself, but I can live with that if you guys convince me it’s the way to go.
Thanks in advance.

No need in my view to spend big bucks. I have no quarrelwithaluminum scope bases. The only thing with the inexpensive rings is you have to be careful not to over tighten them and strip the threads. Of course, they should not be overtightened anyway.

There is out there somewhere a base for the Omega that allows you to mount a scope but also has an integral Williams peep, just like the factory X7 sight. I have often considered doing this to my X7 and mounting a low power scope on it with Warne quick release rings. However drawing elk tags the last two years my shooting cash has been tied up in those endeavors.

The aluminium base will do fine, I usually get steel rings though if you use aluminium rings and you tighten them enough to be sure of them not slipping they are liable to strip and I have use the torque wrench on one of the cheaper ones and had it strip any way. Lee

Thanks, looks like I will stick with the aluminum base and I just picked up some Weaver quad lock rings (also aluminum). Will be careful on tightening them.
