Default Off Topic- Food Plot

Was going to cast some round balls today but i wanted to get a head start on an area recently cut. I hooked the ripper up to the atv and went out back. My first dozen or so passes was basically to pull out all of the sticks -leaves - pine needles.

I used the front plow to push some brush back further and clean up some mounds that were all lumpy, then i backed up to the starting point, dropped the ripper and went to work.

Took me a while to get to where i am now,but its digging in 3" and turning up the soil and also tearing out huge roots and rocks that i couldnt get out before.

First 3 passes ( one pass per row) Still a good # of junk on ground-

Many many passes later LOL,

Everything on the left side of the trail comes out - Except for the BIG trees,

Nearest ripping path was my last drop for the day,

Sandy Soil- Some years ago i accidently spilled oats and they ended up growing pretty well so i figured i would do this area with Oats and mix in some fine blade grass seed.

Made from a reciever hitch LOL

Tomorrow if its nice out i am going to add some weight to the Ripper and it will get it better and really rear things up.

Look's Good MD, where in the heck do you live? It wont look like that around here untill May! It kind of reminds me of some Hunting Property a friend of mine owns, the (Tennessee Gas Pipe-Line) runs throught the property and there is grass growing on it and the Deer are always comming out onto it to feed. By the was does anyone else know of the Tennessee Pipeline? it runs from N.Y. all the way to TN. Back to the grass, do you have to fertilize it to get it to grow? wont you spend a small fortune on grass seed? If you were to just till it up and then let it grow on it's own would'nt it fill in on it's own? Best of luck to you and keep us up-dated. Ron

i can run a a couple hundred feet of garden hose and a sprinkler up to the area, its not far from the house. I'd prefer liquid fertilizer but will make do with what i have.

Grass seed shouldnt be to bad. The Oats i plan on going down to the feed store and buy a 50lb sack and spread it and then use a chain link fence piece to cover the seeds with dirt.

Got to love southern colorado, it was a chilly 61* out today!!! My other field i really wanted to plow still has 8" of snow on it But i did find a nice spot down there to dig a water hole.

heres a map of the areas i am working on now. The smallest circle is where i am at now. The long oval *if u can call it that* will be the hardest area on the ripper as there are tons of tree stumps and rocks. That area we clear cut earlier last year. Google earth is supposed to update the maps in 3 years i believe.

Reminds me of the "Pine Barrens" in South Jersey.

MD...those buildings to the east...is that your place?

Do you test your soil? It appears you've got a bunch of evergreens. Do you ever lime?

Good luck drawing them in!

Nope, thats my neighbor. If you use the smallest circle as a starting point, go south west and you'll see the roof of my house. Or the easiest way LOL, start at my neighbors, head west and take the first drive way on the right

Never used lime, we tested the PH and it was 6.8 in the big field in front of out house. I still have to do the testing at the other sites. I am hoping that i will have to just fertilize to jump start the growing. Grass seed grows easy here as long as it has water so thats why i plan on using a lot of thin blade grass * less water needed*
