Man,
$500 isn't enough for a fine unassembled, unfinished kit in most instances...
I really really really have my eye on a few of these.... I am partial to the Leigh Valley, Lancaster schools... I enjoy the lines of the Isaac Haines styled long rifles...

Besides... when you're out in the middle of no where... and you run out of caps or primers... whatcha gonna do... When you run out of powder, it doesn't matter what gun you have... I'll stick to making fire with a rock... Though my current smokepole is a Lyman GPR in a percussion flavor... Which is more traditional with it's time of representation... Bloody accurate too.

Triumph stands by itself among inlines for accuracy and usability AND you can get one at the right walmarts for a lot less than 500, If you need a traditional I would go with the renagade 54 cal. Lee

hmmmmmmm one muzzleloading rifle. Reckon I would have to go with my White shooting system G-series Whitetail. Great rifle to shoot now that I have found some bullets that it likes to shoot.

I'd keep my Savage 10ML-II. It's a touch over $500 for the version I have (stainless/laminated), but the pure joy of shooting smokeless powder is priceless (and legal in Iowa). All my other ML's have effectively been relegated to mothballs since I got this rifle.
If smokeless were made illegal, then my choice would be my T/C White Mountain Carbine. Compact, lightweight, and wicked accurate with Great Plains conicals. Makes it a great 75 yards gun for thick wooded areas or for carrying unslung for long distances.
