yeah aint nothin like a lethal shot up the ass.

the other choice is to let it go and stalk it for a lethal and respectable shot.

would be nice to know where his first shot hit and what the distance was.
FG,
So a respectable shot at a running away wounded grizzly is let it go and stalk it. Then what shoot itfacing you or quarting to you or broadside and if it runs away again pursure it till it presents a frontal shot? What makes this not a respectable shot? Because it was running away andit was"shot it in the back"? I am curious as to your thinking and value system on a wounded animal. If the animal was not wounded I would say your right on, since obvious the shot was not a good one, but the fact that it was wounded means you have to shoot till it id down. I have seen pictures in Outdoor Life of shots on a Cape buffalo and one of the shots is "straight up the butt". Now my question is why would they show that diagram and shot placement if it wasn't OK. They certainly did not show a shot at the brain when the animal is walking away, wonder why? Wonder why straight up the butt, instead of the brain shot?
Best Wishes,
Chap

Please allow me to hijack for a second......I'm not the most versed on inline bullet selection myself for these things but I do have an accurate combo I just don't know if I'm pushing it too hard?

Is 120grs loose T7going to be pushing a 300gr T/C regular shockwave too hardfor the under 100 (typical 50-75yd) shots I'll see on PA deer? I don't see how it could be realistically, but all your guys' talk of pancackes and fragmenting bullets has me reading too deep into this I think! LOL

I can't see how any deer can hold that much bullet at that velocity or how it could contribute to a possible lost animal but I honestly no not of what I speak........I can only guess?

Would I be better served going to the 300gr bonded version of that bullet?

I know I have yet to have a deer run out of sight with 100grs of regular Goex FFFg black and a 295gr PB hollowpoint from my flintlock even though the bullets I've recovered are pretty banged up too. I do understand that's a pretty hot load for a flinter though but I can't in my mind's eye picture a deer not going butt over tincup with the same weight bullet at a higher velocity.

Your not pushing your SW too hard, some guys over on the Savage Forum shoot SW at 2450 and 2600 fps, so your not even close. The 300g have much better BC and much better holding together capabilities than their 250g brothers. As for the bonded vs unbonded, for deer stay with the unbonded, for elk the bonded is better.

As for the PB, I think your on the upper edge of that bullet's performancewith the 295g HP, I would drop down to 80g or switch as FG suggested to the 295g AT or Platiuum. The fact that you state your bullets are pretty banged up should give you a clue. Look at this 300g Nosler Partition (about same cost as PB, hint) shot into a buck at 30 yard facing me, with a TC Omega, now tell me that ain't pretty. Or to quote "Craig Boddington", who hunts Africa all the time, "long shanks with perfect mushrooms are a thing of beauty" (this is with CF, but same thing is true in MLer). Wonder why he says that and why he doesn't say

"a perfectly pancaked out bullet is a thing of beauty, cause all it energy was absorbed into the animal".

Why does he have that philosophy as a professional gun writer and shooter? Why does Bryce Towsley shoot Barnes bullets, and he is quoted on their webpagesthat the Barnes are "the perfect bullet". How did they get that attitude? When I talked to Jim Shockey at the Feb 2005 Harrisburg Easter Outdoor show and I asked him why he shot Nosler Partitions for all his hunts, his response to me was "becaue they are the the strongest bullet available and they perform the best for me". His is the only man on earth to take all the big game animals with a MLer, why does he use Nosler Partitions? How did he reach those conclusions? Why does he use a 300g Nosler instead of a 250 or 260?
Best Wishes on your bullet quest, itis the most important decision in MLing.

You'll talk for free, as evidenced by your wealth of info on this board (4691 posts) so why should I pay if I can get the milk for free? I think Shockey was a Nosler fan before he became famous, I know he use to shoot Knight, so I know is is paid by TC and by Am. Pioneer, but I believe he reached his thinking in bullets long before he shot APP or TC Pro Hunter. In fact if you read this article:

http://tinyurl.com/5gguhe

you will see this:

MS: On this same line, if you are getting one shot kills on the biggest animals in North America, what bullet and powder combination have you found that is so effective?

JS: It is really pretty simple. I shoot 100 grains of powder behind a 300-grain bullet. This is the same load that I have been using since I started muzzleloader hunting. It has worked great on everything from whitetails in Saskatchewan to Polar bears in the Arctic. The only thing different is now I use two, 50-grain Pyrodex2® pellets and a Nosler Partition® saboted bullet. I have found this combination penetrates extremely well and mushrooms reliably.

MS: How accurate is this combination?

JS: Every rifle is different, but in my gun it shoots really well. However, I try to keep my shots under 100 yards, so pinpoint accuracy is not the most important feature to me-bullet performance is much more critical. I want a bullet that will hold together if it hits heavy bone and still mushroom well if it just hits tissue. The Nosler Partition® design does this perfectly. I personally feel any load that groups under 3" at 100 yards is fine for hunting purposes.

So, Grasshopper, "study the Masters" and you will gain insight and wisdom in your bullet selection.
Best Wishes FG.

We all gotta live FG. As for TB, he gotta divorce from the Savages. He is back at Knight shooting the .52 cal and is into Harvester products and Leatherwood scope. Gotta make a livin' some way when your a writer.

Shockey is a professional guide, so in my mind he is in a totally differnt league, and I have a lot of respect for him, if I could go on a hunt with him I would in a heart beat, but it is way out of my league. All his hunts are 10K minimum, most are $13K, so make no doubt it is about money, but think about it, he has to earn his living during about 2 months of the year.
Best Wishes,
Chap

PRB's have done the job for Hundreds of years. No bullet including conicals, sabots have been used longer than the PRB.
Shot placement is king, penetration is queen. Your queen is not doing well in the penetration game.
Max effective range is about 52 yards I beleive with a Round ball before it falls below the 800 fpe need for effective kill. I know bullets can kill down to 500 fpe, but damage to vital organs and humane kills are not there for me at least. I will never use them again on deer size game, squirrels ok. Deer give me a sabot or conical.
