I will be placing my order through Midway soon for most likely some Gold Dots. Can some of you please give your opinion on what would be best for me based off of my current set up and hunting situation? I shoot a CVA Wolf with 100gr of 777 and 240gr XTPs. They do a pretty good job with accuracy, but I'm looking for a bullet that stays together better. My shots are typically within 50yds, but have the opportunity at 100yd shots every so often. Depending on accuracy, I plan on sticking to around 100gr of powder. I know many are shooting the 300gr, but if I'm shooting 100gr from a 24" barrel, won't the 250gr expand better than the 300s at the lower velocity? I also plan on buying the black, Harvester Crushed Rib sabots. I'm hoping it might be easier to get off a second shot with them. I get a pretty bad crud ring with my current combo and the Kleenbore primers, making it near impossible to w/o swabbing.
Thanks!
Mike

The .458 45/70 bullet either in 300g (preferred) or 405g.
Several Savage shooters shoot the 300g, and if you read all 31 reviews on Cabelas you will find that it is an excellent low cost bullet. The 300g Remington HPs are $25 for 100, the Gold Dots are $18 for 50, so the Gold Dots are about$.36/bullet. Chap

Your clip here says that the 300 XTP has a approximate BC of .230 @ 2200 fps... so the estimation is 30 points higher than Hornady's of .200 @ their computed velocity and I am sure you know that BC is a function of velocity so... I think we might have to add that much + a little to the Gold Dot @ 2200fps..... but I am a mere mortal shooting those 300's out of a regular ML barrel - no way am I going to get 2200 fps shooting a 300 grain bullet with BP/T7 - now you super humans shooting a Savage and smokeless - thatprobably is adifferent story.

Yep I'm a big fan of the 300 grain .452 Uni-Cor softpoint:

Three shots and three kills on whitetails this year. Range was 50 yards. Bullets expanded very well and deer either dropped on the spot or went 25 yards max.

Their BC fits fits right along wit the Hornady XTP... The other nice thing they are .451 - good for tighter bores. They shoot very well.

RE: Which Gold Dot would be better for me?
when you compare the Speer 270 grain .429 cal SP and the Speer 300 grain .451 cal SP they have about the same SD and BC:
270 grain .429 has a .21 SD and .193 BC
300 grain .451 has a .211 SD and .199 BC
Hunting whitetails to elk--don't think you need any other bullet...
