Well the temptation to fire the GPR got me today. After reading a couple posts on another forum and how they shot, i took my .54 GPR flinter out today loaded with 10 grains 4F goex, 70 grains Pyrodex P. First shot i over charged the pan, next shot i cut the charge down to maybe 3-4 grains, Squeezed the trigger and BAM! That SOB went off like my percussion rifle!!
Its dead on @ 25 yards after i drifted the rear sight over a wee bit. I honestly am really surprised at how nice and smooth this rifle goes off. To hell with buying a percussion barrel! lol.
Took a total of 3 shots. #3 shot took 4 pans of primer powder before i had to tap some into the touch hole to get to it to go off. Thats the downside when Duplexing powders. Once i start running straight Goex in this rifle, its going to be bad medicine for anything in its path.
Now i have to go back out and look for patches.

Duplex powder does cause problems.. I agree. When I shoot pure black powder the rifles behave real well. It sounds like you have a good rifle there. I bet it is smooth to shoot as well..

Its very nice to shoulder. Loads smoothly too. I used a hornady .530 ball wrapped in bore butter lubed .018 pillow ticking. Patches i recovered were all in perfect condition. Used two Kabaam soaked patches to clean out the bore after i was done shooting. Just a really rock steady feeling to the rifle.
I also used the thick front sight and nonadjustable rear sight. I see a lot of complaints about the front sight being to thick, but after using it, that baby just sticks out like a sore thumb and makes aiming easier.
If i had used the adjustable rear sight, i would have had to remove a lot of metal on the front sight to slim it down.
When you getting one Cayugad?

Give me a break. [
] I have too many rifles now. Although I did give away a lot of rifles this holiday season so maybe I deserve one. But I would also like that Knight Rolling Block to play with. If I do break down and get a GPR I want to purchase the GPH barrel at the same time.

I have a new .54 Great Plains flintlock also (1 in 60" twist). Haven't shot it yet except for trying out a few pans full of powder. Sparks real well. I love the way it feels - just hangs out there real steady. I bought an extrafactory adjustable rear sight and am in the process of modifying it toan aperturesight something like the LOL Hardware Store sight I made for my Zouave, except the one for the GP will be adjustable and a lot trimmer. I'll post some pictures if I getit working right.
And Cayugad, we all know you're going to end up withboth the KRB and GPR sooner or later. May as well get it over with andget them now.

Im going to stick with the non adjustable rear sight. I really like it. I'll just work up my powder charge first, find which one shoots the best and then file down the front sight. I did quite a bit of work on it lastnight and got the lock area and the front of the stock shapes and ready. Still lots of work on the rear part of the stock. Have t o find some kind of design to carve into it.
