Default break a way sabots

When I bought some bullets today, I asked them if they had any sabots, the sales clerk went to the back room and had some T/C break a way sabots and told me that is what everyone (that buys from them) is using with the type of bullet I bought. I personally did not like the looks of them, too many parts to loose and too much work. I told the clerk I think about it (lied).

Has anyone used them?

I have used and like mag express and sure fire (same sabots from what I can tell but the sure fire are easier to load) and worked a little with mmp (I think I read that they make sabots for T/C), which I think I am going to like.

Break-O-Way sabots are an invention of TC. Tried them when i got back into muzzleloading.TC stillpublishes loading data for them: However, i know of no one who currently uses them. They can be a pain to load and cannot be used with hot loads because they do not seal well.

I have used them in the 50 and 54cal. They work ok with light loads as stated above and do give good results.
As you said your self their are a lot of parts to assembel keep track o. The felt pad is a bugger to keep clean.
I would not buy any, but will and do shoot them when I have been given them.

I shot a pack of them once and decided they were not for me. If the sabot you shoot is not an easy load type, I still like the standard MMP (if they will fit). They hold the bullet well and open fast. If you have a hard loading rifle, then the Harvester Crushed Rib is what I use.

I had good accuracy when I tried them years ago, but they are designed for relatively light powder charges. I believe T/C recommended 80 to 100 grains ffg in a .50 cal.

I used them for about 5 years, I added a bit extra Bore Butter and shot them with a 240 gr lead bullet and 100gr of RS. The groups Averaged about 1.5 to 1.7 inch at 100 yds and I never cleaned the gun till I got home. The do have their points, the one limitation is the load the design just wont work as far as I know with more than 100gr RS or equevilant[ 90 of 777- FF ].
Within their limitation on the 100gr load they did an excellant job for me I took 8 deer with them,if they would work with a bit more powder I would still be using them, this wiping every shot is a pain. Lee
