Lyman advertises its Great Plains Hunter barrel (1 in 32 twist) as suitable for "todays modern conical and sabot bullets". But most manufacturesseem to use a 1 in 28" twist for sabot shooting guns. There's got to be a reason, right"

Anyone out there with a1 in 32" twist gun? What do you shoot out of it?
There is not enough difference between 1/32" and 1/28" twists to make much difference, unless you are going to use coniclas at the extreme edge of length and weight. Any conical that is no longer than around two diameters that hasa reasonably long bearing surface to engage the rifling should shoot pretty well in either. It is much more difficult to stabilize a long conical that a pistol-type bullet in a plastic sabot.

That's good to hear guys. Trying to decide whether to get a 1 in 60 or a 1 in 32on my Christmas .54 Great Plains flinter.

Now, what about patched round balls. Would you call a1 in 32" twist "good","just OK", or "not so good"?
I have a .58 with a 1/60" twist and it shoots the Lyman 570-grain, 57730 Minie Ball very accurately at 100 yards with 120 grains of FFg. It is a flintlock fullstock Hawken-style. MV is 1200 FPS (36" bbl). Needless to say, recoil is "noticeable"

Lyman 57730, 570-grain bullet between two .45/70 rounds

Oh sure! That sounds good. But is 570 grains of lead at 1200 fps enough to kill a deer?

I have two rifles with 1-32 twists. They shoot REAL conicals very well. They also shoot maxiball real well. In the sabot department they shoot a 300 grain XTP pretty good too.
