Yes, "normally" a smallish OP wad of some sort and a tad more shot than powder works well...but all smoothbores sometimes don't understand "normally" and you have to get creative.
I'm glad3F patternsbest for me because it's also faster andwhile hard to measure of course, has to get theshot out of the barrel a little faster.
In my .54 Flint smoothbore I use 70grns 3F& 80grns shot
In this .62 Flint smoothboreI use 80grns 3F & 90grns shot

I seem to get much better results teminally with 3f. The squirrels in the above picture fell to 1 ounce of #6 and about 70 grains of goex. I have taken a jake turkey with it as well. I used 90 gr. and 1 1/4 oz of mixed #4 and #6. I had it along an a night calling episode for coyote with four shotandsome .32 balls in it. I didnt get to use it in anger though.
I really love black powder shotgunning. I find myself carrying it afield more often than any of my other guns. It is a real joy to carry at about 6 pounds, but recoil with stiff loads is brutal. I am going to get some .690 round ball and try it for short range deer hunting this fall.
