Due to serious health issues that are still ongoing, I hadn't looked at my Pursuit LT since I last cleaned/oiled it and put it away last October. Yesterday was 1 of the few days lately where I felt pretty good so I decided to pull it out of the gun safe. Grabbed the wrench and gave the breech plug a turn (it moved a bit stiff at the start), and unscrewed it. First thing I thought was, man it seems dry, I'm sure I lubed it well before putting it away. Then I took a closer look - a slight brownish tinge on about 1/2 of the threads. Rust!! I looked down the barrel and it looked like it needed a cleaning. To make a long story short, the rust was minimal. But - I would have swore with the cleaning I gave it last Fall that there was no way I would have had to worry about such a thing.

In my opinion it just shows the importance of checking on stored firearms on a regular basis, particularly muzzleoaders.

It should be fine. Ive had that happen a time or 2. Ive found that rem oil works good for me with preventing rust. After i apply it, i let it sit for a few minutes to dry and then run one dry patch down the bore to mop up any left overs. You just have to make sure you get the barrel 100% dry before you apply any oil and then put it away.

I've tried may cleaning formulas and different oils & lubes over the years. Since I used Rem Oil a few years ago, it's all I use for coating the bore for rust prevention now. I clean the bore, run some WD-40 through to remove any lingering moisture, run a dry patch or two, then a patch soaked with Rem Oil. Not a speck of rust that way - and I've stored them for several months that way with no problems.

After cleaning all my bores for storageI run a patch of alky down to remove any solvents/moiture from cleaning, then apply a liberal soaked patch of BC barricade or sheath and store on a rag muzzle down in mygun cabinetsto ensure the oil doesn't end up in th action.

As far as a muzzleloader with a removable breech I hand tumble in a light oiled rag (BC barricade as well) and store them out of the gun.

I always recoat my breech plug with anti seize and that last patch down my bore before storage is with Rem Oil w/ Teflon

I also, coat the breech plug with anti seize making sure to get all the threads covered, and then some Birchwood Casey Sheath/Barricade gun oil in the barrel. I have yet to have a problem.

Hope you're getting better fast...

I have used the teflon plumbers tape over the threads of my breech plug and have never needed the anti seize dope.
