This late evening i went out to do some shooting. My mountain rifle is down untill i get the new frizzen spring in, so i went and unwrapped the traditions kentucky .50 flintlock and went out with that. This rifle just isnt fun anymore. I was using a .010 patch soaked with bore butter, a home cast .490 roundball and 60 grains Triple7. First shot went off perfect but a little to the left of the bulls eye, second shot was a flash in the pan, reprimed and went it dead center into the bulls eye, 3ed and final shot went off perfect and again, right into the bulls eye. After today, im really going to start giving triple 7 the upper hand in my flintlocks. I think for target shooting i'll use triple 7 and when i go to sight in for hunting season, MAYBE use goex so i know it wont fail me in the field. I dont know for sure, but in the two flintlocks ive shot with triple 7, its been doing excellent. Im setting up a 100 yard target tomorrow and taking the traditions out again and see how it does and what charge i'll have to use to get it dead on. 4 rifles and now im really screwed and have no clue which one should get the honor of being the first out in the field.
I'll also be ordering a new vent liner for the traditions. This one is egged out badly and in need of a new one. Kind of cool though actually. After i loaded, i pulled the frizzen back and there already was powder for priming lol. Scary, yet kind of nice.

Due to your post the other day, I took my Thompson Center Hawkins flintlock out today. I used Triple Se7en 3f as the main charge and goex as the primer powder. I had terrible results. I then duplexed the load and things were better but still not as good as when I shoot black powder.
Maybe the next flintlock I take out I will try Triple Se7en again, but with the results today (hangfires and misfires) I kind of like Goex. Maybe the difference in our weather is the cause. It was hot and humid here today.
Your results are really interesting...

I havnt had any problems with using straight triple 7. Did you push/press 4f into the flash hole first? What i do, i use my pick and crush up the triple 7 that i can feel in the vent hole, hold the rifle sideways, pour 4f into here and push it in, close frizzen and then give it a knock on the other side of the rifle to knock it loose. The traditions did better with the triple 7 than my cva did.

No, I did not use the pan primer to force powder into the vent hole.
When I duplexed the powder it did a lot better. The power is sure there. But there was just that ... click boom that I do not get with Goex or Graf's black powder.

Ah ok i understand. I was dealing with that yesterday with the cva. The frizzen spring is way to stiff and its hardly sparking due to the spring. I put the cva's frizzen on the tradtions lock and it showers sparks. Would have just swapped out the traditions frizzen springs but the little nipple on the spring that slides into the hole on the lock is to thick and i dont want to ruin it by filing it thinner. Just better to wait another week than to fudge up something that works perfect on one rifle.
