Default Is a Wedge Puller Absolutely Necessary?

Is it a "must have" or just "nice to have"? The reason I ask, is that I just bought a Traditions deerhunter flintlock yesterday, and would like to give it a good cleaning and inspection. Can I just use a punch and something to grab it on the other side? I will more than likely order a puller, but I was just wanting to clean the gun today after I get off work.
