Default What #conical in .54 1-28 twist?

Will be taking delivery of a 1-28 .54 GM barrel [Renegade]@ the end of this month and was wondering if will be able to use my Lymans 450gr Plains mold or TC 430gr Maxi-ball? Not interested in sabots.I see in the fast twist White rifles they are using 535gr and bigger so hopefully I 'm not going to need a custom mold to shoot it.Perhaps I should have ordered a 1-70 ball twist?Any and all feedback welcome.........Harold PS any advantage pro/con to changing this over to musket caps?

It should go off just fine with #11 caps. As for the size of conical, that will be a little hit and miss. You're just going to have to try a lot of different ones. Get a hold of Dan at Bullshop and see what he suggests. He is going to start making conicals in .54 caliber as I understand.

I guess i really do not think you will have any problems shooting the larger longer conicals from your 1/28... They only problem is the selection is kinda limited....

No Excuses makes a slip fit .540 535 grain conicals that will probably shoot great.

Bull Shop is developing some slip 54 cal conicals.

One I really want to try are the Buffalo conical.. 435 and 460... They both have good BC's but I do not know what they are sized at...

Thanx guys.I contacted Bullshop and he thinks I may need bullets in the 600-700gr range.Lyman figures their 450gr Plains will work and I just sent White rifles a note to get their opinion.I hate waiting on a barrel and not knowing what I'll need to shoot it.So it goes.............Harold [may have to get a custom mold made]

The reality is like most gun things, your gona have to just try some different stuff. The White .540 is 1-24" twist. So far all I've shot in mine are the 535 grain NE's, mostly because I have 6 boxes that were on sale at the Sportsmans Warehouse for $9.99 a box. With that 1-28 twist the heavier ones will probably be best but who knows, it may like a shorter bullet too. But since you have that Lyman mold give that a try, it may be just fine.
