The only "conical" I ever really had any luck with in the slow twist barrels are Buffalo Ball-ets. They did the best. While they are only slightly bigger then a roundball, they do not require a patch so are easier to load. I have tried a lot of different ones in the slow twist, but always drift back to the simple roundball for accuracy. Besides, the roundball does all I need it to do.

What kind of accuracy were you getting @ 100 yards?

I used to shoot a 450 grain flat based conical out is a great plains 54 caliber. Max powder load would yield 2.5" at a 100yds, but it was bruttle to the shoulder. I would rather shoot my 69 caliber that that again.

With the ball-ets, about the same as with a roundball. With open sights, I am not real consistent in my groups. One day I might shoot a 2" and the next day we do not want to discuss when shooting long distances. I have even clover leafed them twice in my life with open sights at 100 yards. Talk about happy. Normally with roundball or ball-ets if I shoot a 3" I am tickled to death. If I shoot a 5" it gives me incentive to shoot more. Normally I will shoot between a 3-4" group with open sights and ball-ets. These people that consistantlyshoot these 1-2" tight groups with open sights at 100 yards, I envy.

When I get any rifle with a slow twist, I basically purchase it knowing that it will be a roundball rifle...

I'd be happy if i could achieve 2" groups @ 100 with a ball-et and the slow 1:66 twist. Just waiting for the thing to come in now.

Open sights? Slow twist? Ball or ball-et?

Three to four-inch groups is mighty fine!
