RE: I want a flintlock

Oh boy i have alot more questions. OK so first off I have never shot a deer with a round ball. Can a round ball cleanly take a deer. Second if I do want a round ball gun does the Lyman deerstalker with a 1 in 48 twist have a little to much twist. and my third Question is, Is there a big difference between a .54 and a.58 cal. and witch one would be the best for deer hunting.

THe 54cal would be just fine! It is easier to find 54cal stuff. If roundballs did not cleanly kill deer we would not use them. I know the roundball can be complicated with patch thickness, lubes, material, ect. The 1-48" twist works good for roundballs, conicals, and some sabots. My 54cal with a 1-48" twist loves the 425gr Hornady Great Plains with 100gr powder. You will not go wrong with the 54cal Lyman Deerstalker. Remember flinters like Real Black Powder and only that!

yes a .54 caliber roundball is deadly.. they will put deer on the ground if you do your part and place it.

What kind of projectiles do you have to shoot? Try the 425gr Hornady Great Plains

If your igntion is slow, try keeping the powder to the outside of the pan. And be sure to pick the vent hole so that the spark can get in there easy. I think you're going to have a great time. The rifle should do real well for you.. Keep us posted.

From where did you purchase it? I'm also in the Milwaukee area and am interested in buying the Lyman trade rifle. Did you get it locally? Thanks!

http://www.dnrsports.com/acatalog/D___R_Catalog_Lyman_Muzzleloaders_1529.html $259.17 for a .54 caliber Lyman Trade Rifle Flintlock. I got mine from them. Their shipping was fast and excellent. Also a great place to do business with. Sent right to your door. Also at the same time get a allen head vent liner and change it out. They are so much easier to take in and out without scratching your rifle. I remove mine everytime I clean the barrel. Put a little anti seize on the threads and tuck it back in there...

This is a real good rifle.
