Default TC Porhunter Questions

I just picked up a new TC Prohunter and am going to mount the Nikon Omega BDC 250 whichis a 3x9x40mm. I'm going to use the Talley one piece base & rings just for the Encore and am wondering if I should go low or med w/ a 40mm objective. Anyone using this set up please comment.

Also, other prohunter owners what are you shooting in this rifle?? I'm currently shooting 150 gr of 777 and 240 Hornady XTP 240's. Does the prohunter like this load? I def. want to shoot 150gr and 240-250 bullet as that is what the Nikon Omega BDC is designed around. However, I heard good things about the XTP's. I personally have only shot one deer w/ them, a doe at 25 yards in the front shoulders. Pass through, good blood trail and she only went about 40 yards and piled up. THey're been good to me, but I have heard different.

Thanks for you input.

I have a TC Encore I bought last year and have the one peice Talley Ring/Base set up on it. I have the medium on it. I have a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 and it works well. By the way, hope you have enough eye relief with the scope you are using. I shoot 250 gr. Shockwaves with 150 gr. of Pyrodex pellets and it will get your attention if you are too close. I'm probably gona change scopes in the off season to a Nikon Omega due to it having 5" of Eye relief. Thank the Lord Oakley sunglasses are saftey rated. I shot this weekend and hunted. During my fine tuning season, it hit my glasses a couple of times.

How does thye medium fit? Could you have used the low? I like my scopes as low as I can get them. I agree about the eye relief. I have a Leupold VXII 3x9x40 on my Omega and shooting 150 gr. it would brush me a little. Def. got my attention. That's one of the any reasons I'm getting the Omega.... a full 5" of eye relief.

let me know about your med. talley and if you think a 40mm objective and talley low will work.

THANKS
Dave

Mediums were recommended, however I got away with the low's on mine. I like my scopes as low as possible. Tom.

You don't need 150 gr. of pellets.Use two 50s and one 30 gr. pellet for your200 yard shots.Buy the more consistent& cheaperPyrodex pellets. If you buy loose powder, then the 777 is the better choice of the two. A scope with at least 4" eye relief is recommended with those magnum powder loads.

Just my opinion...

I agree with you "fine tuners" but I only muzzleload 2-3 total days a year. I really don't want to dick around measuring, etc and like the ease of the pellets and the availability. However, if accuracy is that much better I'll go w/ loose. Plus, I want to shoot 150gr. because that is what the BDC is calibrated for. So how much of a different in accuracy am I going to see at 100 yrs with saw 150gr. 777 pellets vs. 150gr. of 777 loose, or 130 gr. of 777 loose. Thanks

Head0001,
How is the hammer clearnace with the low mount? The prohunter has the swinghammer swung to the side so I should be fine. But I don't want to be dicking around if I have gloves on. Do you think the lows are too low? When I toss the gun up I wantthe thing to fall in place. I don't want to adjust at all.I'd like to try both out buthave to order them from cableasand don't wanttohave to dick around with shipping back etc. Sobasically I'm goingoffwhat you'retelling me

If you decide to shoot loose 777 DON'T go over 120 to possibly 125 grs of loose 777, that is a max load as 777 loose is about 15% more powerful than the same grain charge in pellets. The pellets are equil to 150 gr of loose black powder or Pyrodex, not loose 777. The loose is only more accurat if you take the time to work up a load 5 grs at a time.
I think you will find your scope is set up for 150 grs of 777 pellets and a 250 gr Shock Wave bullet. The XTPs have a lower BC ( because of the fairly blunt nose ) the XTPs will hit lower at long range than the SSTs or Shock Waves (Same Bullets just different sabot).
