I wonder if someone out there has a junk muzzleloader that they'd donate in the name of science to Cayugad?
Cayugad,
Would you be able to grind a muzzleloader barrel? Would it hurt to much to do it? lol.

For what it is worth; I just talked with one of the Magkor people and they did similar tests on soft steel plates in Florida humidity and their results were staining of the plate with Black Mag'3 but no corrosion effect. The results on brass however were somewhat different. Ascorbic acid based powders eat brass fast!! Be aware and keep your brass fixtures away or flush them with water soon after exposure to burned powder.

I thought it would be cool to get a a barrel and fire 100gr FFG Goex in it, then cut an inch off. Next clean the rest of the barrel back to normal and cut it into one inch pieces. Then I could put some kind of rust preventor on each piece and keep it outside. The one with th blackpowder that I did not clean would just stay like that.

you need a barrel that is cut in half its length..then make your tests on that..
what you are doing is great thing,it could prove that powder could stay in barrel for a while and not rust it..
question is, where can we find a barrel and how to cut it in half??

I was thinking of getting a old barrel, and take valve grinding compound to the bore. Scrub that thing back to bare metal. After that clean it all real well. Then take a chop saw and chunk the barrel up and test each individual chunk. I might have a handle on half of a Hawkins barrel. If I get that I will repeat the tests and after seeing how many chunks I can get off it, (2" should be plenty long) I will let the forum pick the powders to be tested... and under what kind of conditions...

well if that barrel shoots good, then I better pass on it or it would end up in my collection.
Some of them pitted barrels work real good, even though they might not look all that good. I just bought some .54 caliber sabots to try in a couple rifles. I like to shoot anything I can get my hands on.

Darn it - Dave, I wasn't going to do this but I think I will try to pick up a Renegade stock for it off e-bay. The barrel looks ugly inside and you could never sell it for a decent amount of money - but it does shoot well. Just what I need to do - tell terry I am going to try to get another stock so I have another ML gun -
But it does shoot well...
