Lead HP bullet are best for under 150 yards... ie... Buffalo S.S.B. Bargain-priced around $16.99 for 36 too.
In coppers, I recommend the Barnes Expanders & Hornady XTPsfor300grusers --theSpeer Gold Dot HPsfor 230-250gr users.

I really think we are really on about the same page... good conversation...
. I must admit I haven't been able to get a hot sub load to shoot good enough for my standards to use for hunting but would like to see how the SST or SW fairs with such. My understanding is it was designed with the 1800- 2000fps area in mind. I received pretty much the same performance with the sst on 50 yards shot as my furthest 209 yards shot, slight larger than caliber holes on both sides of the animal. Just not anywhere up to what I expect from a polymer bullet. I have been shooting BT's for many years out of various cf cartridges and get great terminal performance when the rib cage is only hit on deer. When bone is hit at high rate of speed it can get pretty messy. I spit the 150BT out ofthe 7mm rem mag and boy does it do a number on our big bodied deer. Wouldn't even dream on using one for an elk or moose, thats why nosler makes parts and/or barnes makes the x

I have had very good luck with the SST bullets and the 240 grain XTP in.44 caliber. Killed a bunch of hogs and deer with theSST - no failures and no second shots orfollowing blood trails. Shot an SST through both shoulders of a 350 pound hog and it left a huge exit hole.
I lost an elk dueto a 300 grain PTX and 150 grains.Foundthe next day by another hunter who took her out. That bullet had not expanded. It went through her lungs and left a one half inch exit hole. No bloodtrail to speak of and then even that clotted up and went away.
The PTX is the bullet with the round plastic nose andis less streamlined than the SST.

I have heard people say they don't open up and other people say they fragment; and yet some others say they are the same as Shock waves which work just fine for me with a load of 120 or 130 gr depending on which gun I am using.
WHAT load were you pushing them with? I use 250gr XTP when I know my shots will be less than 100yds. They will work well all the way down to 100gr. Lee
