Default Best Range session since I started

I went to go shoot my54cal Renegadetoday before season opens on Saturday to make sure everything was still on. The weather simulated good hunting conditions. It was a little cold with a slight breeze. I started out shooting the Hornady Great Plains 425gr. I shot at an elk target I bought and did really good. I was hitting in the vitals with a 3" group max ( it was probably smaller). This was using 100gr Goex FFG. After shooting fantistic groups at 50yds I got out some roundballs. I started out at 80gr and worked my way up to 100gr. My rifle really likes 100gr FFG charges. I had really good groups like I was getting with the Great Plains (3" max). I think the groups with both were about 2" but I did not measure. I was using .015 pillowtic with Lehigh Valley. The fowling stayed low with damp/wet patches and loaded easy. I tried a few semi-dry and they also shot great. The patches I found were a little frayed on the edges but other than that in good condition. I think I will hunt with the roundball. I do not know why patches were not as good last time. I am glad I got two loads developed but I still do not know what to hunt deer with. Both are on and are shooting really good groups. When I tried the ball-ets 310gr the tumbled with 100gr Goex FFG. I did not think much and only shot a few. I did not try to develope a load for those. All and all I had not misfires to. This was the best range day since I started the sport.

Good luck hunting Sharp Shooter.. roundball and deer will be a good combination. I've killed a lot of deer with a simple roundball out of my .54 caliber Renegade. Again, good luck.

Very little works as good as a 54 cal PRB on deer, most I have shot dropped right on the spot. I use a .535 RB and ticking patch with 110 RS ever since they started selling Pyrodex.Lee

Lee

I thinkyou need to give a little credit to110 grains of powder too!

That's one hot travelin'roundball smacking into that deer hide. Lowest B.C. on earth doesn't matter at that speed.
