RE: Traditions Hawken
If this is the Tradition's Woodsman Hawkins.. I have one of them in .50 caliber. It is a great roundball shooting rifle. Also you're right about the nice wood and it being a good rifle.I bought it from Sportsman's Guide back in 1996 because it had a 1-66 twist.
The new rifles are 1-48 twist they only put the slow twist in the very expensive tradition rifles now. The 1/48 twist will shoot roundball and conicals well. I have a Tradition's Pioneer .50 caliber Hawkins with that twist and it is a great roundball shooter with 70 grains of powder and a patched roundball.
If this on the other hand is a Tradition's St Louis Hawkins, they also have 1-48 twist. They have standard fixedsights. The wood stock is all right, not fancy and not special. And they are a good shooter. Although they were being sold by Sportsman's Guide last year for $117.95.
The Tradition's traditional rifles are good rifles. They shoot good and depending on which one you buy, the wood gets better as the cost increases. I personally like Tradition's hawkins rifles. They shoot real well. The only thing that made me a little upset with Traditions was, the stock cracked on my Pioneer. Traditions was contacted and they told me there was nothing they could do for me and suggested I glue the crack. That's the difference between Traditions and Thompson Center. When my Renegade stock cracked, they replaced the stock.... So you get what you pay for in the long run.

RE: Traditions Hawken
well i did it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its mine now. its the woodsman 50 cal 28'' 1 in 48 barrel, fully ajustable rear site. fit in finish seems good. the ramrod spring was way too tight so i took some tension outta it. i also knocked down a couple a ruff spots in the stock/barrel inlet, and tightened the loose screws. gonna see if #11 caps fit the nipple later when i start gearin up ta shoot. anything else i should check ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????
also how should i care fer this brass ????????????????? ther's some green specs inside the patchbox.
all in all looks like a fine rifle.

First make sure the barrel is very clean. I strongly suggest some solvent in there because a lot of the new rifles come with a packing grease in them that can be hard to get out. A solvent will usually cut that grease and bring it out. Although a good hot water bath will too.
Since you made sure all the screws are tight. The next steps after it is cleaned is to shoot it. You might want to down the road get a stainless steel hot shot nipple for the rifle. Also mine likes Goex 2f and also shoots well with Pyrodex RS.
I think you are going to really like that rifle. They are sweet shooters. This picture does not do my rifle justice. It was very overcast that day I was shooting and the squirrels made the mistake of coming too close to the house...
