What do you guys use for a rest when siting in your rifle? Also what is the proper way to do this, do you justlay the rifle barrel on the rest and more or less not use your left hand for anything (right handed shooter) or should you hold the barrel down onto the rest? I think this question makes sense, or you'll at least be able to understand what i'm asking.

That's my homemade shooting rest. A $3.00 garage sale trailer jack and some scrap lumber. Then a chunk of foam out of an old car seat and held on with some duct tape. To raise and lower the butt of the rifle I have a wedge cut that slide under it between the side supports. I might have $5.00 and some time wrapped up in it.

I did just purchase a Caldwell DeadShot front and rear bag from USA Midway (#795203) for $11.99. It takes 12 pounds of rice to fill the two bags. Then I run off today and forgot to take them to try them out.

As for my holding pattern, I like to rest on the forearm of the stock (never the barrel) of the rifle. I use my left hand to only support the stock to make it a level hold so the rifle is not canted. When I fire it, I let the recoil all come back to me. It seems to work for me.

what purpose do the peices of wood at the rear whichgo on each side the side of the stock serve?

nice set-up. the only thing i do different is sand bag under rear of stock below my shoulder.

i would guess and say ,nice way of holding gun so he can put his alcohol patch in barrel after each shotwithout gun falling over.

I always put the forearm of the gun on the front rest, not the barrel. Also, never put the forearm on a rigid surface, needs to have some give in it or it will change the point of impact. In the field also never put the forearm on a rigid rest to shoot. Put you hand between the forearm and the rest (tree, rock, etc.) although a soft daypack works well too.

Sandbags have always worked best for me at the range. Easiest to change and maintain a point of impact for me. Although rice bags would probably work as well. I usually have one under thebutt and 2 under the forearm.

Actually I set my shoulder to the back of that wood and the butt of the rifle fits always into the same spot without a canter to it. It helps control the recoil as there is a small leather strap in there also, so the gun can never kick out of control (when I remember to use it). With the wedge you slide under the butt of the rifle it will adjust the level of the rifle so you are not trying to hold it all up on your own. Also it makes a nice place to rest the rifle while I check the target. I swab it out, leave the breech open and then walk down range and the rifle is up out of the way of my over grown labrador that thinks all rifles are beautiful and should be bumped into.

Depends on the rifle for me. With some of my rifles I can let the left arm just rest on the bench but with my G2 it's hang on for dear life! Have I told any of you guys how much I like my G2?

of all the bags,and rests i used over years,3 sandbags like you said is best.at the public ranges at our club, i made up a bunch for each station. i see shooters come out with real nice adjustable rests etc. guess what.after a few shots,they move them out of the way and grab the 3 sandbags,ha.its funny to watch.i made some of my bags with old sweaters using sleeves and sowed theends closed.they make the best restfor shooting, i feel.i have adjustable front rests too but like sandbags .
