Most of the fellas that huntBoar often would know about this but those that have to travel to hunt them might not,a hogs heart and lungs are forward from where a deers are. Check this out.Lee

Good information, Lemoyne. Buffalo are also kind of deceiving in this way too - the heart and lungs are very low and far forward from what a deer hunter would expect. And the spine runs much lower in the chest than members of the deer family. This creates a huge backstrap. The piece of meat weighs almost 100 lbs. If you try to shoot a buffao where the center of the lungs would be on an elk, for instance, you will hit this piece of meat. The buffalo will not be amused.

I was always told when I boar hunt with a bow to desire the quartering away shot and hit right behind the lower shoulder. I can see why now. No way I could penetrate that shoulder with a bow. And no way to get thru the breast plate.

Bigcountry,I usually hunt them with a bow mybest shot is when I can hit the forward part of the neck to diagonal to the area behind the oppsite front shoulder.
This up coming trip is to try out my new Omega trying to gather a bit of info on Shock Wave preformance particularly the 50/40 200gr they shoot really good with 150 APP in it but the 250 will hold an inch to. Lee

Is this shoulder sheild all that hard to penetrate with a muzzleloader? I have heard others talk about avoiding that area, but I would think a good conical or even a shockwave type tip should be able to bust through there. So since I have people who have hunted them responding, they can best tell the true answer.

cayugad, I have seen it around a half to three quarter inch thick on a big Boar, its hard cartilage, and the hide around the shoulder is thick and often mostly scar tissue; Bullets and arrows can penatrate it if you hit it square but it will slow them down some. Lee

PLACING A SHOT OFF THE SHOULDER INTO THE RIB CAGE WILL NOT HIT THE HEART LUNG AREA! SHOTS MUST BE PLACED INTO THE MID SHOULDER OR NECK
I totally disagree.if you look at the hand in the pic. stright down is the leg. shoot for the point of the elbow(just like a deer) will take out the heart.just behind and above will get the lungs.
a hog id built a little like a tank.low and the shield protects the heart and lungs from the tush of other boars.as far as B/P and good broadheads they will take them out with no problems unless you hit the bone with the broadhead.a quartering away, slip it in just behind the leg will work great.
to me from my experences(for the last 40 years of hog hunting) hogs are easier to take down than deer.an old buck will go and go and go.
thats just me ; "some will disagree with me on this ; but there wrong" LOL
no offence!!

Cayugad, I was recently on a hog hunt and lost mine as it did not penetrate the skull. I was using a 250 gr Shockwave Bonded bullet with 100 gr pyro and it did not phase him, right between the eyes. The guide found tracts and he said based on those, the pig was staggering and would be fine in a few days.A guy in our group shot a hog that weighed 289 and when they cut him up he had 2" of gristle on each side of his shoulders. He shot it with a 300 ultra mag in the ear and dropped it where it was standing at 100 yds.I think you could penetrate it only at a close range if the hog is large. A good eating hog is around 100 lbs and I think the shoulder shot could be made with better success. I was the only crazy one with a ML having one shot and walking through the woods. I am hooked on these beasts and it is quite the thrill for sure, especially hunting at night for these with a full moon and a symphony of howling coyotes.
