The photos in the web sight previously listed are pretty accurate.A 250 grain shockwave should be perfect for hogs with 100 grains up to 150 grains of powder. I was more surprised at the way a hogs spine takes that downward dip. A muzzleloader would be plenty to take any hog in this state. Ive had to chase a large hog in excess of 300 lbs that was hit behind the shoulder with a 30-06. We had to track it over a mile before finding it. Place your shots midway of the areas between the ear and shoulder. If you are looking for a heart and double lunge hit, center punch the shoulder just above where the leg crosses the belly of the pig. That should be an instantaneous drop. Spine hits are also the same. Head shots are tricky. Quartering away shots snugged up behing the shoulder are excellent.

Cayugad, I was recently on a hog hunt and lost mine as it did not penetrate the skull. I was using a 250 gr Shockwave Bonded bullet with 100 gr pyro and it did not phase him, right between the eyes. The guide found tracts and he said based on those, the pig was staggering and would be fine in a few days.A guy in our group shot a hog that weighed 289 and when they cut him up he had 2" of gristle on each side of his shoulders. He shot it with a 300 ultra mag in the ear and dropped it where it was standing at 100 yds.I think you could penetrate it only at a close range if the hog is large. A good eating hog is around 100 lbs and I think the shoulder shot could be made with better success. I was the only crazy one with a ML having one shot and walking through the woods. I am hooked on these beasts and it is quite the thrill for sure, especially hunting at night for these with a full moon and a symphony of howling coyotes.
So they think the shockwave hit the skull and glanced off... very interesting. How far away were you from the pig, and you said you were on the ground which might or might not help with the angle of the bullet. Maybe a tree stand is the way to shoot them from.

Foreheads on pigs and steers are thick and tuff. I've clobbered a few critters in my days between the eyes for one reason or another, with all sorts of things. Most of the time it takes them to their knees. That Shockwave must have glanced off. A cousin of mine shot a deer between the eyes once with a .270 and he knocked it out, but it was far from dead as he learned real fast.

That shoulder plate sounds like it could be a devil to shoot through. I still think a large conical could do it. I guess I will just have to get out there and hunt them things real soon. But maybe not with shockwaves...

Good pics and good information. I have also heard that this forward placement of the heart and lungs is true for many of the African game. Uncle Tedley often points that out when he's over there (or hunting them in Texas). I have seen some TV shows in Africa where an archer actually aimed for (and hit) AHEAD of the front leg. I thought it was a bad shot, but they quickly recovered the animals - no differently than a behind the shoulder shot on a whitetail.

Gotbuck - with you wandering around thewoods with one shot - surrounded by wild pigs makes your avatar seem more appropriate

Cayugad,
The plate in the shoulder of the pig is only thick cartilage. Any of the shockwaves or any bullet for that matter should have no problems going through. I've taken them with a 223 in that area and that small caliber blows a nice hole. You just need to be close...within 100 yards to get a DRT (Dead Right There) kill. Shockwaves should be awesome on pigs. Due to theweight retention of the shockwaves, I'm excited about hammering an oinker with one. The only thing that I would maybe suggest is the heaver 250 grain or higher shockwaves will have greater energies. I'm gona try 200 grains also.

my wife can tell you about B/P hogs.these are just two she took this year.both were taken with a 45 cal.CVA B/P.shooting 100 grain pyrodex pellets , 225 grain powerbelts bullets.
they both fell with in 5 or 6 steps of being hit.
my wife may kill me for this , but she is not a small woman.so you can see these are not small hogs.

they were both BIG hogs.

Nice pigs, tell your wife she's awesome, my wife wouldn't dare shoot a pig, much less go hunting.

I will pass on the kind words.she says she would rather shoot a hog than a deer.she says "you don't have to look for horns".

I have killed lots of hogs most with a ml, some with spear and a 270 cal. When hunting with a spear be sure you got good dogs that would not let go. When i gun hunt for hogs the only shot i take is in the arm pit, right behind the front leg. With bow or spear you got to hit the neck bone or the heart, the heart is right behind the front leg in the armpit. I took a few guys hunting one night with my dogs the only weapon was a knife and spear. When my dogs got one caught i would get close enough to cut its throat or spear it in the heart. But i am not able to hunt this way any more thanks to a judge that though that using catch dogs was too cruel. This was after one of the guys taped the hunt when the dogs were holding the hog and i stabed it in the heart with a knife.
