when talking about scopes the topic of eye relief has come up. what is the difference between 4" and 6"? Also when mounting the bottom two mounts for my weaver style see thru scope mounts do the slots for the mounting bolt face the front of the gun or the rear. I realise these are probably idiotic questions, but I don't have alot of experience with scopes and want to make sure I'm doing it right. the reason I ask is that I have mounted my scope and in order for me to bring the qun up to my cheek and be able to see thru the scope I have had to move the scope all the way back to where the ring butts up to where the scope starts to widen at the front and there is no more rearward adjustment. again the help is much appreciated

Eye relief is important. 4" is plenty. I found a 6" on a Bushnell scope I bought, too much. I was moving all over that stock to get a good eye picture.
As for which way the mounts go into the base, have you tried turning them around and see if it made a difference in how much play you have on the scope?

If you do alot of cold weather hunting with your smoke pole and wear 3-4 layers of upper body clothing or heavy/thick overalls this can change your eye relief due to thickness of outer wear at shoulder.Might want to compensate for this in your eye relief set up.

I agree with cayugad once again.
I have the Bushnells in both 4" and 6" eye relief. If the scope is mounted in a standard position, the 4" is plenty. I tried the 6" on my Encore 209x50 barrell and found that I was pulling my face too far back on the stock. For my Encore slug barrel, the 6" works great because the mounting base is farther forward. If you can, take your gun to the shop and lay both scopes in the bases and see which one is more comfortable to you. If you can't do that, I think the 4" would be fine.
