I currently have a tasco junk scope on my CVAGrey Wolf .50 percussion rifle. It was not up to the task and couldn't handle the shock of a ml. This scope was probably made for someones .22. In looking for a new scope at a price I can afford I found a Simmons BP scope 4x22mm. Is this a decent scope? I know Simmons has a good reputation but I know nothing about their black powder scopes. OK truth be told I know very little about bp at all. I'm still learning. If anyone could give me some insight here I'd be grateful.

I would recomend a Bushnell Bantam, I have two one on a 50 one on a 54, I have been using one of them for a lot of years the one on the 50 is only about 6 years old.the magnification is only 2.5 but that suits me for hunting and they have a long eye relief which lets me use them at awakward angles, deer like to sneak up behind my stand. I was mistaken, it is a 4x20. Sportsmans guide has it and I have found it on other sights as well. It is made specifically for bp rifles. The main reason I'm interested is because it is clearance priced. $30 for the thing. On other sights I found it to be $90. So if anyone has used it let me know, deal or dud? And no, I didn't learn a lesson from buying a cheap scope before or I wouldn't be trying to do it again.LOL.

20mm is a rimfire scope. Be aware of 32mm rimfire scopes also. They won't hold up to the recoil.Minimum size objectivewould be a 32mm for a muzzleloader or centerfire rifle. I would suggest buying the best scope you can afford. A 3-9X40mm is my favorite scope. Cabela's has a Bushnell for $60. Try Walmart for some good prices. I bought a Leupold 3-9X40mm Rifleman scope for $200.
Hunt with the scope on 3X and if you have a tough shot, dial it up to 9X. The 40mm objectivegives you a larger field of view so you can find your target faster.
Remember, be aware of your target and beyond. Open sights are better than a cheap scope.

Specialty Scopes
Specialty scopes for shotguns and muzzleloaders typically have extra-long eye relief (more than 4 inches) so you can mount them well forward. Cantilever mounts on shotgun barrels work well with scopes of this type. So do black powder rifles that require easy access to firing mechanisms that lie under ocular bells of ordinary scopes. A bold, thick reticle is standard on shotgun/muzzleloader scopes because it’s easy to see, and there’s no need for great precision when hunting big game at modest ranges. Scopes for turkey hunting commonly feature a circle in combination with a plex reticle. The circle, typically subtending 30 inches at 40 yards, can be used as a rangefinder.
